Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - The South Atlantic League has announced that Charleston RiverDogs right-hander Christian Morris (4-1, 2.23) has been named the South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 6-12 for his performance against the Asheville Tourists on Thursday, June 9th.
Thursday night was the eighth start of the season in a Charleston uniform for Morris. The Williston, Florida native commanded the strike zone and kept hitters off balance with a dominating showing, throwing six innings, giving up no runs, just a lone hit, two walks, and 7 strikeouts. This is the first weekly honor the RiverDog pitcher has received in his professional career.
This season with the RiverDogs Morris holds a 4-1 record with a 2.23 ERA in eight games (8 starts), giving up just 10 earned runs in 40.1 innings and striking out 39.
Morris, a 22-year-old, made his debut with Charleston on April 30th, after spending last season in rookie ball and one game with Advanced-A Tampa. With the Gulf Coast Yankees 2, the pitcher posted a 0-3 record with a 5.40 ERA in 8 appearances, 7 of them starts, while striking out 24 batters in 26.2 innings to go along with 10 walks. Now in his second season of professional baseball, Morris touts a career 4-4 record with a 3.63 ERA in 69.1 innings of work after being drafted by the Yankees in the 33rd round of the 2015 draft out of Indiana University.
The Charleston RiverDogs are in the midst of a four game series at home with the Augusta GreenJackets June 13-15 before heading on the road to face the West Virginia Power June 16-19, to wrap up the first half of the season. The RiverDogs are currently sitting atop the Southern Division in the South Atlantic League with a 37-24 overall record and a 5.5 game lead over the Augusta GreenJackets with a chance to clinch the playoffs, the first time in 11 years.
