 Trenton Thunder

More Dominant Pitching in 3-2 Win over Bowie

September 3, 2017 - Eastern League (EL1)
Trenton Thunder News Release

BOWIE, MD - The Trenton Thunder used more strong pitching, as the bullpen retired the final nine men they faced to hold on to a one-run lead in a 3-2 win Thursday night over the Bowie Baysox.

Your Thunder improve to 90-46 with the win and became just the sixth team in the last 60 years of Eastern League play to record a 90-win season. The last team to do it was the 2002 Akron Aeros who went 93-49. Trenton becomes the only franchise in the last 60 years to record two 90-win seasons, joining the 1999 club that went 92-50. By virtue of the shorter schedule, the Trenton Thunder would set the record for best season by win percentage by winning two of the remaining four games against Reading.

Before the bullpen could wrest control of the game, Trenton starting pitcher Brody Koerner went six strong innings allowing just one run. With the quality start, he improved his record to 6-3 with the Thunder and lowered his Double-A ERA to 4.08.

Then out of the bullpen, Anyelo Gomez entered and allowed an unearned run in the 7th inning before retiring six in a row and then passing the baton on to Cody Carroll for the final three outs of the game.

The offense scored a 1st-inning run just three batters into the game when Garrett Cooper flipped a single into right field to score Mark Payton who had doubled with one out. Cooper then singled to lead off the 4th inning and later came home to score with two outs, before Dante Bichette Jr. capped the scoring on the night for Trenton with a monster home run into the forest in left field for his fourth homer of the season.

Your Thunder pile on the bus following Thursday's game and return home to ARM & HAMMER Park for the final homestand of the regular season. The four-game series against the Reading Fightin Phils begins at 7:00 p.m. Friday night. The ballgame will feature a Phillie Phanatic appearance, presented by Visit Bucks County. Gates open for all fans at 5:30 p.m. with a happy hour special of $1.00 drafts (Bud/Bud Light/Michelob Ultra) and $2 Premium drafts from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. with $2.00 drafts and $2.50 bottles (Bud/Bud Light/Michelob Ultra) until middle of the 5th inning. Coverage of the game can be heard with Adam Giardino and Jon Mozes calling all the action on 920 AM The Jersey and online at www.trentonthunder.com/broadcast.
