Moose Streak Stalls In Week Seven

November 26, 2007 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release

After an exciting 5-3 victory Wednesday night at Rochester (in which Mason Raymond played a part in every Moose scoring play), Manitoba's five-game win-streak came to an end Friday night in Syracuse, followed by an overtime loss to the Monsters the following night in Cleveland.

Wednesday, November 21, 2007: Moose 5 - Americans 3 W

Moose rookie Mason Raymond scored his first professional hat-trick and added two assists for five points in Manitoba's 5-3 victory over the Americans in Rochester Wednesday night. The victory extended Manitoba's win-streak to five games and marked the club's fourth straight win vs. Rochester this season.

Friday, November 23, 2007: Moose 4 - Crunch 6 L

Manitoba's five-game winning streak came to an end Friday night in Syracuse, as the Crunch battled back from an early two-goal deficit to beat the Moose 6-4. Syracuse's Joakim Lindstrom had two goals and two assists, while Manitoba's Jason Jaffray tallied three goals and seven shots for his first hat-trick of 07-08 and second of his pro career.

Saturday, November 24, 2007: Moose 4 - Monsters 5 OTL

After both teams traded 78 shots and several one-goal leads through three periods of play, the Lake Erie Monsters defeated the Manitoba Moose 5-4 in overtime Saturday night. Monsters netminder Jason Bacashihua stopped 42 of 46 shots for the win, while Moose forward Greg Classen led all skaters with two goals and an assist.

The latter half of Manitoba's seven-game road-trip (the club's longest of the season) gets underway Friday night in Iowa. A win over the Stars would conclude the best November on record for the Manitoba Moose and prevent the club from experiencing their first three-game losing streak of 07-08.

MOOSE NOTES

QUARTERLY REPORT: With one quarter of the 07-08 contest behind them, the Moose have a 12-6-2-0 record and 26 points, matching the club's best-ever start in seven AHL seasons and third-best start in franchise history. In 2004-05, the Moose also earned 26 points after 20 games, while Manitoba's best performance after the first quarter was in 1998-99, when the team went 14-3-3 for 31 points. Last season, the Moose were 8-8-2-2 (.500) after 20 games, and the team's worst opening quarter was in 2003-04 when the Moose went 6-10-3-1 for 16 of 40 potential points (.400).

NOVEMBER RECORD STILL WITHIN REACH: With a 6-4 loss Nov. 23 at Syracuse and a 5-4 overtime loss Nov. 24 at Lake Erie, Manitoba registered their first consecutive losses since Nov. 3 & 9/07, when the club dropped 2-1 decisions to Rockford and Milwaukee. Prior to the losses in Week 7, the Moose had won eight of their last 10 games, including four of five on the road. With one game left to play this month (Nov. 30 at Iowa), the Moose have earned 13 of 20 (.650) possible points in November. The club needs to earn two points Friday night vs. the Stars in order to post their best November on record and better the 21-of-32 points (.656) they earned in November 2005. Since joining the AHL in 2001-02, the Moose have never finished below .500 in the month of November.

MAN-ADVANTAGE MARKERS: Thanks to powerplay goals by Greg Classen (3), Colby Genoway (2), and Jason Jaffray (1), the Moose went 6-for-16 (37.5%) on the man-advantage in last week's three games. Prior to the last five games in which the Moose went 9-for-26 (34.6%), the Moose had gone 2-for-33 (6.1%) in seven games, including a four-game stretch in which the club scored no powerplay goals. Manitoba now sits seventh in the AHL with a 20.0 PP%. When away from the MTS Centre, the Moose have scored on 23.5% of powerplays, good for 5th in the AHL.

HEAVY ON HAT-TRICKS: Following rookie Mason Raymond's three-goal and five-point performance (a franchise rookie record) Nov. 21 at Rochester, Jason Jaffray's hat-trick Nov. 23 at Syracuse marked only the third time in franchise history that two Moose players have scored hat-tricks in two consecutive games. On Oct. 9 & 11/97, Greg Pankewicz and Ralph Intranuovo scored three goals respectively for the Moose, while Lee Goren and Jason King also posted consecutive hat-tricks on Oct. 15 & 16/05. In 1997-98, Manitoba recorded a franchise-record seven hat-tricks, while in 2001-02, no Moose player scored more than two goals in a single game. Last season, Jaffray scored Manitoba's lone regular-season hat-trick (a four-goal performance on Oct. 24/06 at Chicago) and only playoff hat-trick (May 1/07 vs. Grand Rapids).

UPCOMING OPPONENTS

The Iowa Stars host the Manitoba Moose for the first of four games between these Western Conference opponents Friday night in Des Moines. For the second consecutive season, the Moose went 3-1-0-0 vs. the Stars in 06-07, improving their all-time record to 6-2-0-0 over two seasons of AHL contests. Both of Manitoba's losses -- including the club's seventh and final shutout loss of 06-07 (1-0, Apr. 1/07) -- came at the Wells Fargo Arena.

Game 2 of Manitoba and Quad City's season series goes down Saturday night. The Moose and Flames met for the first time ever Halloween night in Moline, with the Moose pulling away with a come-from-behind 3-2 shootout win - their second shootout win of the season. Last season, the Calgary Flames affiliate was located in Omaha, NE. The Moose were 3-1-0-0 vs. Omaha last season, bringing their franchise record to 4-3-0-1 over two seasons against the Ak-Sar-Ben Knights.
