Moose Pick Up Four Points In Week 22

The Manitoba Moose spent Week 22 in Texas with three consecutive games against West Division rivals. Manitoba finished the week with a 2-1-0-0 record after earning a series-ending win over Houston and then splitting their final regular season set with San Antonio. Sergei Shirokov won the point clock this week after earning three (1g & 2a) on the road trip.

Thursday, February 25, 2010: Manitoba 3, Houston 2 The Manitoba Moose topped the Houston Aeros 3-2 on Thursday night to close-out their four-game regular season series against the club at the Toyota Center. Manitoba finished with an even 2-2-0-0 record against Houston this campaign. Sergei Shirokov, Michael Grabner and Pierre-Cedric Labrie all notched goals for the Moose while Cory Schneider stopped 26 of 28 shots in his 25th victory this season.

Friday, February 26, 2010: Manitoba 0, San Antonio 4 The Manitoba Moose suffered their fourth shutout of the season after a 4-0 loss to the San Antonio Rampage on Friday night in front of 6,725 fans at the AT&T Centre. Goaltender Cory Schneider stopped 27 of 31 shots in his 18th loss of the season.

Saturday, February 27, 2010: Manitoba 3, San Antonio 1 After dropping a 4-0 shutout decision to the Rampage on Friday night, the Moose got revenge beating the San Antonio club 3-1 in the rematch on Saturday in front of 8,252 spectators at the AT&T Centre. Nolan Baumgartner, Matt Pettinger and Guillaume Desbiens all scored for Manitoba while goaltender Daren Machesney had a solid outing stopping 35 of 36 shots in the victory.

Moose Notes

MARCH MADNESS: The Moose start the last full month of the regular season sitting in fourth place in the North Division with 66 points. Last season, the Moose entered the month of March in the league's top spot with 87 points. Manitoba has 12 games on the docket for March, with eight being played at MTS Centre. The Moose's best-ever March on record was in 2007-08 when the club went 10-1-0-2 for an 88.4 winning percentage. In eight previous AHL seasons, the antler crew has never finished below.500 in March, dropping as low as the.500 mark only once in 2004-05 (5-5-2-1).

EVERY GAME COUNTS: With only 18 games left on their 2009-10 regular season schedule, the Moose are battling hard in a very tight North Division race. The Moose currently sit in fourth place in the North with 66 points after 62 games played. The third place Abbotsford Heat and second place Rochester Americans are only four points ahead of Manitoba with 70 points each -- the Americans holding one-game in hand over the B.C. club. Hamilton remains comfortably in top spot with 86 points. The bottom half of the North Division is also tight with the fifth place Lake Erie Monsters only three points back of Manitoba and the sixth place Toronto Marlies only five points back of moving up to fifth. Grand Rapids, who the Moose will visit next weekend, sit in seventh place with 54 points.

Upcoming Opponents

Starting tomorrow night, Manitoba Moose will host the Worcester Sharks for the first time ever at MTS Centre. The club's will close-out their four-game regular season set with a doubleheader ending Wednesday night. So far this season, the Moose are 0-2-0-0 against the Sharks after dropping back-to-back games to the Worcester club back in January (Jan. 27, 1-3L; Jan. 29, 3-5L). Moose right-winger Guillaume Desbiens leads all Moose skaters with three points (1g & 2a) against the San Jose affiliate.

Player of the Week Nominee

Sergei Shirokov

For the second time this season, Sergei Shirokov is nominated for AHL Player of the Week... The right-winger appeared in all three of Manitoba's games this week on their West Division road trip... On February 25th, he opened the scoring on the powerplay against the Houston Aeros... He finished the night a plus-1 while firing three shots on net... On Feb. 27th against the Rampage, Shirokov collected two assists in the third period to help the Moose to a 3-1 victory... He finished the night a plus-1 with two shots on net... Currently, Shirokov sits second on Manitoba's leaderboard with 38 points (18g & 20a) after 59 games played... He also holds seventh on the AHL rookie scoring leaderboard...
