Sacramento River Cats News Release

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sacramento River Cats catcher Luke Montz has been named the Pacific Coast League Player of the Week for the week of June 3-9, the PCL announced today.

Montz drove in a PCL-leading 13 runs with three home runs and two doubles in his five games played. In all, he went 8-for-19 (.421) with three walks and a hit-by-pitch, giving him a .521 on-base percentage for the week. The catcher-who has also started at first base and designated hitter for the Cats this season-began the week with a 4-for-5 performance on Tuesday, June 4, in Tacoma, driving in all six of Sacramento's runs in the team's 6-2 win.

Montz began the year with the River Cats before selected by the A's on May 1. While with Oakland, he hit .179 with one home run and five RBIs in 13 games, spanning 28 at-bats, before rejoining the River Cats on June 1. Montz is hitting .316 on the year for Sacramento with eight home runs, eight doubles and eight singles, including 25 RBIs in his 21 games played.

The Duson, La.-native was selected in the 17th round of the 2003 first-year player draft by the Montreal Expos before making his MLB debut on Sept. 4, 2008, with the Washington Nationals. Montz spent four seasons in the minor league systems of the Mets and Marlins between his debut with the Nationals in 2008 and his return to the big leagues earlier this season with the A's. The slugger also finished second in the PCL with 29 home runs while a member of the New Orleans Zephyrs a year ago.

Montz is the third River Cats player honored by the league this year, as Scott Moore was named Player of the Week for the week of May 20-26, one week after Bruce Billings took home Pitcher of the Week Honors for the week of May 13-19.
