Montz and Torres Tabbed as PCL Player and Pitcher of the Week

June 10, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release

ROUND ROCK, Texas - In a week of great performances, Luke Montz of the Sacramento River Cats and Carlos Torres of the Las Vegas 51s were elite as the Pacific Coast League announced them today as the Player and Pitcher of the Week for June 3rd through 9th. Montz collected hits in four of the five games he played in last week, including three home runs and two doubles as he helped the River Cats to a 4-1 record during that period. The catcher hit .421 and was first in the PCL with 13 RBI and 1.500 OPS. On Tuesday, Montz went 4-for-5 with a double and a home run, and accounted for all six of Sacramento's RBI in their 6-2 win at Tacoma. Montz added five more RBI in a 14-5 win at Tucson on Friday, including a 3-run home run.

Born in Lafayette, Louisiana, Montz was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 17th round of the 2003 draft out of Hill College in Hillsboro, Texas. Montz made his Major League debut as a member of the Washington Nationals on September 4th, 2008. He signed minor league contracts with the Florida Marlins in 2011 and 2012, and then with the Oakland Athletics prior to the 2013 season. In 2012, Montz hit .222 for the New Orleans Zephyrs with 29 home runs and 79 RBI and is currently batting .316 with eight home runs in 21 games for Sacramento.

Torres picks up his first PCL Pitcher of the Week award of his career, adding to his three International League weekly honors in 2010 as a member of the Charlotte Knights. Torres had two of the most dominating performances of the PCL season last week, earning victories in both outings. On June 3rd in Fresno, the right-hander tossed a three-hit complete game shutout while striking out 11 Grizzlies without issuing a walk. He continued his domination on Sunday in Tacoma with another complete game in which he allowed just a single run and two hits while striking out four. His league-leading 18 innings and 15 strikeouts for the week were accompanied by an outstanding 0.50 ERA and 0.39 WHIP.

Torres, from Santa Cruz, California, was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 15th round in 2004 out of Kansas State University. He made his Major League debut with the White Sox on June 22nd, 2009. Torres pitched in Japan for the Yomiuri Giants in 2011 before signing a minor league contract with the Colorado Rockies in 2012. After a season in Colorado Springs, Torres was signed to a minor league deal by the New York Mets before the 2013 season and has gone 6-3 with a 3.89 ERA for the Las Vegas 51s.
