Monsters Outlast Checkers in See-Saw Battle, 4-2

CLEVELAND - The AHL's defending Calder Cup Champions, the Cleveland Monsters, proudly powered by Constellation, defeated the Charlotte Checkers on Tuesday at The Q by a final score of 4-2. With the win, the Monsters improved to 14-11-1-2 overall this season and with a .554 points percentage, currently sit tied with the Chicago Wolves for third place in the AHL's Central Division standings.

After a scoreless opening period, a slick setup from Marc-Andre Bergeron and T.J. Tynan delivered Monsters rookie Jordan Maletta an even-strength breakaway that he parlayed into a backhand finish, high to the stick-side, at 16:26 of the middle frame to make it 1-0 Cleveland.

In the final stanza, Charlotte tied the game at one when Lucas Wallmark buried a shorthanded score just 30 seconds in, but Cleveland's Oliver Bjorkstrand wheeled and fired from the left circle at 1:09 of the period to put the Monsters back in front thanks to assists from Bergeron and John Ramage at even strength. The Checkers scratched back to tie the game at two on a Connor Brickley deflection at 14:51 of the final period before Ramage put the Monsters in front for good at 16:06 with a turnaround wrister, fed by Ryan Craig and Tynan, at five-on-five. An empty-net Bjorsktrand tally at 18:11, set up by Markus Hannikainen and Ramage, capped the scoring in a 4-2 Monsters win that extended Cleveland's season-long point streak to seven games.

Monsters goaltender Joonas Korpisalo improved to 5-3-2 in net for the Monsters by virtue of a 29-save performance while Parma, OH native Alex Nedeljkovic stopped 25 pucks in defeat for Charlotte to fall to 3-12-0 between the pipes for the Checkers this season.
