Monell's pinch-hit wins it in 9th

July 13, 2009 - South Atlantic League (SAL1) - Augusta GreenJackets News Release

Augusta, GA - Trailing 2-1 entering the last half of the ninth inning, the Augusta GreenJackets came from behind in their final at-bat for the second time this week to win 3-2 on Johnny Monell's two-run single against the West Virginia Power on Monday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

Down a run in the ninth, Andy D'Alessio singled and was lifted for pinch runner Mike Loberg. Ehire Adrianza walked to put two on and James Simmons' sacrifice bunt set the Jackets up with two in scoring position. Monell's pinch-hit provided the fourth Augusta walk-off win this season and only their second all year when trailing in their final at-bat.

Simmons' two-out solo home run in the second inning was the lone run in the game until the ninth inning when West Virginia took advantage of three hits and sloppy Augusta defense to claim the lead with a pair of runs. Starling Marte tapped an infield single and moved to third on Edwin Quirarte's throwing error to put the tying run 90 feet away. Jeremy Farrell dribbled a two-strike pitch down the first-base line past a drawn-in Josh Mazzola to tie the game at one.

After Erik Huber's single put two on, Danny Bomback's bunt was thrown wild at third when Charlie Culberson slipped as Quirarte aimed for the lead runner, allowing Farrell to score the go-ahead run. Once the bases were loaded, Chris Wilson (2-4) came on to strike out Tony Sanchez to send the game to the bottom of the ninth.

Diego Moreno (0-1) gets the loss for West Virginia after 2.1 solid innings of relief, allowing three hits and only the tying and winning runs. He struck out three and walked one.

Aaron King struck out one and allowed just two hits in five scoreless innings in the no decision, walking four. Rudy Owens - the league's winningest pitcher - allowed just the Simmons blast on six hits with four strikeouts and a walk.
