Monarchs Sign Backup Goaltender

MANCHESTER, NH - The Manchester Monarchs, the primary affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, have signed goaltender Matt Lopes to a professional tryout agreement, Monarchs Director of Hockey Operations Hubie McDonough announced today.

Lopes, 24, has served as the backup goaltender for the ECHL's Elmira Jackals and the CHL's Mississippi Riverkings this season but has yet to make his pro debut. The 5-foot-11, 185-pound native of East Falmouth, Massachusetts spent the last two seasons playing for Gustavus Adolphus College and registered a 16-10-0 record with a 2.24 goals-against-average and a .899 save percentage in 27 games from 2007-09.

Lopes also spent two seasons at the University of Massachusetts-Boston where he appeared in 20 games and collected a record of 0-13-2, a 5.48 goals-against-average and a .875 save percentage from 2005-07. He will wear No. 31 for the Monarchs and will serve as goaltender Jeff Zatkoff's backup on Wednesday night.
