Monarchs Game Day Capsule, April 6

April 6, 2018 - ECHL (ECHL)
Manchester Monarchs News Release

THE CHANCE TO CLINCH

The Monarchs will have a chance to clinch the North Division tonight with a regulation win against the Thunder. With three games left in their season, Manchester (86) is one point up on Adirondack (85), who has two games remaining in their season. Meanwhile, the Reading Royals (83) sit third in the division, trailed by the Worcester Railers (80) and the Wheeling Nailers (77). If the playoffs were to start today, the Monarchs would play the Railers in the first round.

AS EVEN AS THEY COME

Manchester and Adirondack have created a rivalry over the last two seasons, meeting in the playoffs both years, with the Thunder victorious during the 2016 season and the Monarchs getting revenge in the 2017 season. However, the rivalry is even better than what we see on the surface, with the Monarchs playing to a 19-19-2-2 record over the past two seasons against the Thunder, along with an even 5-5-1-1 record this season against Adirondack. Through 12 games this season, the Monarchs have outscored the Thunder by one goal, 43-42.

TWO PLAYERS TO WATCH FOR

The Monarchs will have to keep an eye on Shane Conacher, who is averaging two points per game against the Monarchs this season, recording 16 points (5g, 11a) in only eight games played. The Thunder will need to find a way to slow down Matt Schmalz, who leads the Monarchs with 13 points (8g, 5a) against the Thunder this season, in 12 games played.

WE SHOULD KNOW BY THE THIRD

With these two teams, the game is usually decided after 40 minutes. When leading after two periods this season, the Monarchs have posted a record of 26-0-2-1, while the Thunder are 27-2-0-1. On the flip side, these two teams rarely make a comeback when trailing after two periods, with the Monarchs coming back just twice in their 22 chances and the Thunder coming back to win five times in their 31 chances.
