Manchester Monarchs News Release

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Manchester Monarchs couldn't climb out of a five-goal hole, and fell to the South Carolina Stingrays, 5-3, Saturday night at the South Charleston Coliseum.

The Monarchs (29-14-5-4) ended their season series with the Stingrays (29-20-2-1) with a 2-2-1-0 record.

The Stingrays opened the scoring early, when John Parker netted his 11th goal of the season just 16 seconds into the game. Parker took a pass in the low slot from Marcus Perrier, and sent a backhander that trickled through Monarchs goaltender, Sam Brittain, for the early, 1-0, lead.

South Carolina added to their lead when Rob Flick scored his 24th goal of the season at 6:51 of the opening period. Flick converted on a tic-tac-toe play with Domenic Monardo and Patrick Gaul, lifting a shot over the blocker of a downed Brittain to make the score, 2-0, South Carolina.

The Stingrays made it a 3-0 game when Marcus Perrier netted his 7th goal of the season at 5:48 of the second period. A turnover behind the Monarchs net created the chance for Perrier, who took a pass from Tim McGauley in the slot and beat Brittain through the five-hole to add to the Stingrays lead.

South Carolina continued to pour it on when Domenic Monardo scored his 9th goal of the season at 6:51 of the second period. After a Stingrays face-off win that went into the left corner, Flick fired a centering pass to the slot where Monardo redirected the puck up and over the glove of Brittain, to make the score, 4-0, Stingrays, and chase Brittain from the game.

Parker scored his 2nd goal of the game at 9:41 of the middle frame to make the score, 5-0, South Carolina. Perrier followed the puck into the left corner after a dump-in by Parker from center ice, but the Monarchs defense lost Parker who took a pass all alone in the slot and flipped the puck over the glove of new Monarchs goaltender, Jonah Imoo.

The Monarchs got on the board at 16:33 when Rick Pinkston scored his 3rd goal of the season. After a scrum in front of the net, Pinkston found the puck on his backhand, sent the puck towards the net that Stingrays goaltender, Joe Cannata, stopped, but Cannata swiped the rebound into the net, to bring the game to 5-1.

Cory Ward made the score 5-2 when he netted his 13th goal of the season at 17:38 of the middle frame. Rihards Bukarts entered the zone on the right wing, skated towards the top of the circle and found Ward in the slot, where he redirected a backhander past the blocker of Cannata to bring the Monarchs to within three.

The Monarchs inched closer when Bukarts scored his 13th goal of the season at 3:29 of the third period. After a face-off win by Ward in the right dot, Bukarts located the puck in the slot, and while being taken to the ice, lifted a backhand over the blocker of Cannata to make the score, 5-3, Stingrays.

Despite pressure late in the third period, Manchester wouldn't get any closer, only getting five shots on goal in the final frame.

The Monarchs return to the ice Friday, Feb. 24 (7 p.m.), when they host the Brampton Beast for the first time this season at SNHU Arena.
