Manchester Monarchs News Release

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Manchester Monarchs couldn't hold off the Worcester Railers on Opening Night, and fell, 4-3, Saturday at the DCU Center.

The Monarchs (0-1-0-0) dropped their first-ever match-up with the Railers (1-0-0-0).

The Railers broke the ice when Wade Murphy scored his 1st goal of the season at 10:13 of the opening period. Murphy went in alone on Monarchs goaltender, Evan Cowley, deked twice and roofed a forehand over Cowley's glove to make the score, 1-0, Worcester.

Worcester double their lead at 5:43 of the second period when Ashton Rome scored his 1st goal of the season. Rome took a diagonal, cross-ice pass from Barry Almeida, and sent a wrister past the glove of Cowley to make it a 2-0 game.

The Monarchs got on the board just five seconds after the Rome tally, when Michael Doherty potted his 1st goal of the season at 5:48 of the middle frame. Doherty found the rebound off a Sam Kurker shot from the point and backhanded the puck past the right leg of Railers netminder, Eamon McAdam, to make the score, 2-1, Worcester.

Manchester tied the game when Tony Cameranesi scored his 1st goal of the season at 10:57 of the second period. Cameranesi took a pass from Jordan Smotherman in the slot and one-timed his shot through the five-hole of McAdam, to tie the score, 2-2.

The Monarchs took their first lead of the game when Doherty scored his second goal of the night at 11:32. Doherty found the loose puck to the left of McAdam's goal and sent home his 2nd goal of the season to put the Monarchs up, 3-2.

The Manchester lead was short-lived, as Patrick McNally squared the game at 16:06 of the high-scoring second period, on his 1st goal of the season. McNally split two Monarchs defenders and sent a snap shot over the glove of Cowley to even the game, 3-3.

Worcester took the lead for good when Frankie DiChiara scored his 1st goal of the season at 12:12 of the third period. DiChiara grabbed a failed Monarchs clearing attempt to the right of the cage and fired a wrister past Cowley, to put Worcester up, 4-3.

The Monarchs return to the ice Sunday, Oct. 15 (2 p.m.), when they travel to Canada to take on the Brampton Beast in a rematch of the 2017 North Division Finals.

The Monarchs play their 2017-18 home opener Oct. 21 (7 p.m.), when they drop the puck against the Worcester Railers at SNHU Arena.
