Mobile BayBears News Release

JACKSON, TN - With the tying run just 90-feet away from scoring, BayBears RHP Matt Stites caught Generals SS Benji Gonzalez in run down back to third base for the final out of the game. The out secured the Mobile BayBears 3-2 win over the Jackson Generals in game one of Saturday night's doubleheader at The Ballpark at Jackson. The Generals would exact revenge in game two of the doubleheader by shutting out the BayBears 5-0 to take 2-1 series advantage.

Game one's victory for Mobile (8-14) snapped a six-game losing streak, the franchise's longest winless drought since the BayBears lost seven straight games from July 21 - July 28 in 2012. That same season Mobile would go on to win their fourth Southern League Championship.

Shortstop Ildemaro Vargas extended his season-high hit streak to eight games with a lead-off single to begin the game for Mobile. Vargas would score later in the inning on a RBI single from RF Gabriel Guerrero, putting the BayBears up 1-0. The second run was driven in by catcher Michael Perez, who connected on a RBI single to score Todd Glaesmann. Then, in the top of the third inning Mobile took a 3-0 lead with another RBI single from Guerrero.

The Generals (14-8) would post one run in the sixth inning and another in seventh frame to pull within one run before Stites silenced the Generals crowd with the out of Gonzalez at third to end the game and the BayBears' losing streak.

LHP Anthony Banda (1-1) earned the win in game one, the first of his Double-A career. The BayBears lefty allowed just one run on three hits, walking one and striking out five in 5.2 innings.

In game two, the Generals used three homeruns to propel themselves to a 5-0 shutout of the BayBears. Jackson tallied four of their five runs off of BayBears RHP Yoan Lopez, who lost for the second time in as many starts. The righty gave up the four runs on six hits, walking three and striking out five in 3.2 innings. Saturday's scoreless performance by Mobile was the third time the BayBears had been blanked in a game this season.

Game four of the BayBears current road trip in West Tennessee is set for 2:05 PM Sunday afternoon. Mobile and Jackson will conclude the five game series on Monday, May 2 and the BayBears look to return home to open up a five game homestand against the Chattanooga Lookouts. The homestand runs from Wednesday, May 4 - Sunday, May 8.
