Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release

KEIZER, Oregon - Wednesday morning, the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes received an upgrade to an already talented outfield in the form of Jacob Heyward. The ex-University of Miami Hurricane and younger brother of Chicago Cubs star Jason Heyward was selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 18th round of the 2016 draft. He was also drafted in the 38th round in 2013 by the Atlanta Braves out of high school, but declined to play at the collegiate level.

While at Miami, Jacob's breakout campaign came in his sophomore season, when he slashed .327/.440/.473 with four doubles, four home runs, 24 RBI and 37 runs scored as the Hurricanes' starting right fielder. He was also named to the 2015 College World Series All-Tournament Team after being the U's best hitter in the NCAA tournament. Heyward hit .355 in nine total postseason games and a team-best .455 in three games at the College World Series.

Entering this year's draft, Baseball America composed this scouting report: "Heyward has good bat speed that translates in above-average raw power thanks to his strong 6-foot-3, 210 pound frame. He has an average arm and average speed. Defensively, he fits best in left field. His bat will have to play more consistently to fit that profile, but he has good enough raw tools for a team to bet on his ability to improve."

Thus far in his first summer of professional baseball - with the Arizona League Giants - Heyward has unquestionably demonstrated the ability to improve and develop. Through 28 games, the 21-year old hit .337, which ranks second on the team, while accumulating 16 extra-base hits and driving in 21 runs. Heyward has also flashed the unique combination of patience at the plate and speed on the base paths, earning 24 walks and stealing 10 bases. Defensively, he's seen action predominantly in left field, making 20 starts and owns one outfield assist.

Heyward will be joining the Volcanoes as the get set to finish their five-game series against the Vancouver Canadians this week before coming home for the final games of the season starting Saturday, Sunday and Monday (September 3-5).
