Missions Denied Sweep in 4-3 Loss to Hooks

August 1, 2013 - Texas League (TL1)
San Antonio Missions News Release

The Missions bid for a sweep came up a run short in a 4-3 loss to the Hooks Wednesday night at Wolff Stadium.

Corpus Christi opened the game's scoring in the second, touching San Antonio starter Josh Geer (6-4) for two runs on five hits.

Three innings later, catcher Max Stassi put the Hooks up 4-0 when he drilled Geer's 1-0 pitch over the left-field wall. Stassi went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, finishing a double short of the cycle. Since the All-Star break, Stassi leads all of Minor League Baseball with 14 home runs.

For a while it appeared that the four-run lead would be plenty for Texas League wins leader David Martinez, who kept the Missions off the board through his first seven innings Wednesday.

However, Martinez (13-2) ran into immediate trouble in the eighth as San Antonio loaded the bases before making an out. Tommy Medica followed with a long single off the left-field wall that cut the Missions deficit in half. Next batter, Johan Limonta made the score 4-3 with a sacrifice fly to deep right. Not wanting to let the lead slip away, Hooks manager Keith Bodie called on reliever Patrick Urckfitz, who prevented further damage by getting both Yeison Asencio and Jake Blackwood to hit into force outs.

Urckfitz worked around a two-out single by Cory Spangenberg in the ninth to earn his seventh save of the season.

San Antonio (62-47, 24-16) will head to Frisco Thursday to begin a four-game series with the RoughRiders. Donn Roach (6-9, 3.76) will get the ball for the Missions in the series opener, while the 'Riders counter with right-hander Arlett Mavare (1-2, 4.74).

Notes: The Missions will have a notable addition to their roster in time for Thursday's opener. The San Diego Padres announced on Wednesday that prospect Austin Hedges will be promoted from High-A Lake Elsinore to Double-A San Antonio. The 20-year-old catcher, who is the Padres' second-ranked prospect according to MLB.com, was hitting .263 with 21 doubles, one triple, three homers, 26 RBI and 31 runs scored in 65 games for the Storm. Also on the move is reliever Matt Stites, who was involved in Wednesday's trade with Arizona involving right-hander Ian Kennedy. In 46 games with the Missions, Stites was 2-2 with a 2.08 ERA and a TL-leading 14 saves.
