Misiewicz Halts BayBears in 1-0 Win

Montgomery still leads Wild Card by 7.5 games over Tennessee

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Anthony Misiewicz (3-1) threw a complete-game shutout, and Grant Kay's third-inning RBI-single gave the Biscuits (74-58) the only run they needed to earn their fourth win of the year over the Mobile BayBears (62-69) on Sunday night at Riverwalk Stadium, 1-0. It was the first complete-game nine inning shutout thrown at home since Austin Pruitt accomplished the feat back on July 8, 2015. The Biscuits are now just one win and Tennessee loss away from clinching a playoff spot for a record-breaking third-straight year.

Misiewicz, who was making his fourth start of the season, was terrific, striking out two and walking only one in his third victory of the year. The game was scoreless through the first two and a-half innings until Grant Kay swatted a RBI-single to center field and scored Michael Russell for the games only run.

Misiewicz took just 98 pitches to complete the feat, coming just eight pitches shy of former Biscuit Austin Pruitt, who threw his 2015 complete game shutout in just 90 pitches. In that 2015 game, Pruitt went nine innings while allowing just three hits, no walks and striking out five, while tonight's Southpaw allowed just five while punching out two.

Over his last 20 innings, Misiewicz has allowed just two earned runs and three walks while striking out fifteen for an otherworldly 0.90 earned run average through his first three starts at home this year. Pruitt through his first three starts at Riverwalk was nowhere near as dominant, allowing six earned runs over 19 innings, walking five and striking out 14, while recording a 2.84 ERA.

Misiewicz efforts helped keep the Biscuits magic number at two, meaning that if they can come away with a victory in two of their next eight games, they will clinch a playoff spot for a third-straight year. It would also be the first time in the past two seasons the Biscuits have made it as a wild card, having clinched the second half in each of their last two years.

The former Michigan State product would run into some trouble in the ninth after retiring his first two batters on a fly out and a groundout. Baybears third baseman Zach Houchins hit a hard groundball to Andrew Velazquez, who after bobbling it, would field and make an errant throw wide of first baseman Dalton Kelly. Houchins advanced to second on the throw and put the complete game shutout in jeopardy. But then Misiewicz mustard up enough strength to stay composed and retired Mobile's second baseman Jose Rojas on a lineout to third baseman Grant Kay to earn the 1-0 complete game shutout.

Montgomery remains seven and a-half games ahead of Tennessee in the Wild Card standings and will try to take the series lead tomorrow when Benton Moss (3-4) wrangles with Grayson Long (8-6) on Monday night at 7:05 PM CT.
