Minor League Baseball Announces April Players of the Month

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida. - Minor League Baseball today announced the Player of the Month Award winners for each of the 10 full season leagues for the month of April. Each winner will receive an award from Minor League Baseball in recognition of the honor.

Louisville Bats (Reds) infielder Jermaine Curtis led the International League in average (.385), RBI (18), on-base percentage (.515) and was hit by a pitch a league-best six times. Curtis, 28, is in his second year in the Cincinnati organization after spending seven years with St. Louis, who selected him in the fifth round of the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of UCLA.

Tacoma Rainiers (Mariners) catcher Mike Zunino batted .397 in April and led the Pacific Coast League in slugging percentage (.767) and OPS (1.205), while tying for the league lead with seven home runs and 56 total bases. He also tied for second in extra-base hits (13) and RBI (22). Zunino, 25, was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the first round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Florida.

Trenton Thunder (Yankees) left-handed pitcher Dietrich Enns dominated the Eastern League in April, going 3-0 in four starts without allowing a run. The southpaw allowed just nine hits while striking out 25 over 23.2 innings, holding opponents to a .120 batting average. Enns was selected by New York in the 19th round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of Central Michigan University.

Tennessee Smokies (Cubs) infielder Chesny Young led the Southern League in average (.402), hits (33) and on-base percentage (.505) in April. His 11 stolen bases were second in the league, while his 43 total bases were tied for third in the league. Young, 23, was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 14th round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of Mercer University.

Frisco RoughRiders (Rangers) centerfielder Ryan Cordell led the Texas League in slugging (.688) and runs scored (20), while finishing second in average (.363), RBI (22), hits (29), extra-base hits (15) and total bases (55). Cordell hit in 20 of 21 April games and hit in 17 straight games from April 12-May 1. Cordell, 24, was selected by Texas in the 11th round of the 2013 FirstYear Player Draft out of Liberty University.

High Desert Mavericks (Rangers) infielder Travis Demeritte topped the California League in home runs (eight), runs scored (23), extra-base hits (18) total bases (61), slugging percentage (.753) and OPS (1.147) in April. Demeritte hit in 15 of his 20 April contests and recorded at least one extra-base hit in 12 games. Demeritte, 21, was selected by Texas in the first round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft out of Winder-Barrow High School in Winder, Georgia.

Winston-Salem Dash (White Sox) third baseman Nick Basto led the Carolina League in batting average (.433), hits (39), onbase percentage (.480) and OPS (1.147) in April. He was second in slugging percentage (.667) and tied for fourth in home runs (four) and extra-base hits (12). Basto, 22, was selected by Chicago in the fifth round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of Archbishop McCarthy High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Bradenton Marauders (Pirates) left-handed pitcher Brandon Waddell went 4-0 with a 0.93 ERA in five starts to capture Florida State League Player of the Month honors. Waddell allowed just 13 hits and two walks while striking out 26 over 29.0 innings and did not allow more than three hits in a start. Waddell, 21, was promoted to Double-A Altoona earlier this week. He was selected by Pittsburgh in the fifth round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Virginia.

Fort Wayne TinCaps (Padres) catcher Austin Allen led the Midwest League in batting average (.460), slugging (.603) and OPS (1.143). Allen walked more times (10) than he struck out (eight) and hit in 11 straight games to start the season, including eight multi-hit games during the streak. Allen, 22, was selected by San Diego in the fourth round of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft out of the Florida Institute of Technology.

West Virginia Power (Pirates) right-handed pitcher Mitch Keller went 2-1 with a 0.86 ERA in four April starts to claim South Atlantic League Player of the Month honors. Keller allowed just 12 hits, walked one and struck out 28 while holding opponents to a .167 batting average and one extra-base hit over 21.0 innings. Keller, 20, was selected by Pittsburgh in the second round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of Xavier High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
