Miners Take Series Win Over Aigles

Sussex County Miners News Release

Trois-Rivières, QC - Starting pitcher Francisco Rodriguez threw six scoreless innings, and the Miners offense came up with timely hits to guide Sussex County to a 5-1 win over defending Can-Am champion Trois-Rivières on Thursday night.

Rodriguez (1-1) came out strong in the game, matching zeroes on the scoreboard through the first 4 innings with opposing starting pitcher Ryan Bollinger. The only inning that gave Rodriguez any trouble was the 2nd, but he worked out of a bases loaded jam in the 2nd by getting SS Delvis Morales to strike out and CF David Amberson to fly out to C Jay Austin to end the inning.

The Miners bats would once again scratch out a run to open the scoring, this time in the 5th inning. With one out, 2B Ryan Lashley laced a single to right field. Austin then followed with a double into the right field corner to set up 2nd and 3rd with still one out. Michael Antonio then reached base on an error by 3B Eric Grabe, driving in Lashley with the game's first run.

Sussex County would then bust the game open with a 4-run 7th inning. RF Sean Hurley led off with a single, and two batters later Jay Austin reached on a fielder's choice when 2B Jalen Harris tried to get Hurley on a force play at 2nd base, but pulled Morales of the bag with the throw. That set the stage for C Gaby Juarbe to rope a hard single up the middle to score Hurley with the game's 2nd run. Then, after reliever David Leblanc issued a walk to LF Carl Thomore to load the bases, Aigles' Philippe-Alexandre Valiquette surrendered a bases-clearing double off of the bat of DH Elvin Soto to expand the Miners lead to 5-0. With the double, Miners batters are now 3-for-3 in bases loaded situations with a HR (Chris Duffy) and 8 RBI.

From there, the Miners' bullpen closed the door on Trois-Rivières. Ray Hanson, in his first outing of the season, worked his way through a scoreless 7th, then Josh Wood worked a spotless 8th. Nick Gonzalez came on in the 9th allowing an unearned run to secure the Miners 3rd victory in the last four games, as well as notch their first series win of the season.

The Miners return home on Friday to take on the Ottawa Champions at 7:05 pm. News 12 New Jersey's Kurt Sieglin will be on hand to tape a segment for "On The Road" as well as throw out the first pitch, and it will also be magnet schedule giveaway at Skylands Stadium. Tickets are available on the Miners website, visiting the Skylands Stadium box office, or by calling (973) 940-0222. The game will be broadcast on the Miners Radio Network and also on canamleague.tv.
