April 3, 2017 - Prospect League (Prospect) - West Virginia Miners
A pair of right-handed pitchers, Casey Queener and Shawn Dumser, have both signed contracts to play with the West Virginia Miners during the 2017 Prospect League baseball season this coming summer. The Miners announced their contract signings on the morning of April 3 and makes them the 22nd and 23rd names to be revealed that will make up the Miners' 28-man roster this coming summer.
Queener is currently playing his sophomore season in Nashville,TN at Belmont University, which is a member of the NCAA Division I Ohio Valley Conference. Through games of March 31, he has an 0-1 record in five games (four starts) for the Bruins. The 6-1, 200 pounder has struck out 17 hitters against allowing 8 walks in 17.1 inning of work.
The highlight of Queener's freshman year at Belmont in 2016 was throwing 6.2 scoreless innings of relief on February 28, 2016 versus Army.
He will celebrate his 21st birthday on July 9 and landed at Belmont following a superb senior high school season at Franklin Road Academy, located in his hometown of Brentwood, TN. His final scholastic season saw him register an outstanding 1.11 earned run average that included 63 strikeouts in only 44 innings on the mound. He was an All-State selection for a team that played in the state championship game.
Dumser, a 5-10, 185 pounder from La Mirada, CA, will be journeying to Beckley this summer following the completion of his freshman season at Hope International University, located in Fullerton, CA.
Through the Royals' first 27 games (18-9 record) of the year through March 31, Dumser has appeared in seven games (two starts) and shows a 1-1 record in 13 innings of work that includes 10 strikeouts versus four walks.
He had three outstanding scholastic varsity baseball seasons wearing the colors of his hometown at La Mirada High School. There, he was virtually untouchable with a career earned run average of 0.83 over 67 innings that also included one complete game no-hitter. He won nine of his eleven decisions on the mound as a high schooler.
Dumser will join his current college teammate (and 2016 member of the West Virginia Miners) Art Salazar, Jr. on the Miners pitching staff this coming summer.
The Prospect League is the premier collegiate wood bat summer baseball league in the Midwest. It has been operating in its current form since 2009 while serving the summer baseball needs of top collegiate players. The 2016 Prospect League title won by the Miners was the team's third league championship in the last five seasons.
Season-long box seats and other ticket packages for the West Virginia Miners are already on sale for the 2017 Prospect League season, which begins on May 30 while the Miners home opener will be on June 1 versus the Butler (PA) Blue Sox.
