March 10, 2017 - Prospect League (Prospect) - West Virginia Miners
Brandon Nylin, a 6-1, 200-pound pitcher, has signed his contract to play with the West Virginia Miners during the 2017 Prospect League season. His signing was announced by the Miners organization on the morning of March 10 as the 16th of the many individual contract signings expected to be periodically unveiled by the Beckley, WV based team over the next several months.
Nylin, whose hometown is Hyde Park, NY, is currently a member of the baseball team at Indiana University-Southeast after starting his collegiate career at Herkimer County Community College in Herkimer, NY.
The right-hander caught the attention of college coaches on the heels of an outstanding high school career at his hometown's Roosevelt high School. His career stats on the mound saw him strike out 57 hitters versus 38 walks in 52 innings of work. His 17 career high school pitching appearances (9 games started) saw him notch a 3-4 record that also included one save and a complete game shutout. With the bat, he also was a .315 career hitter (57-for-181) as a high schooler.
He is currently teammates at IUSE with two members from the West Virginia Miners' 2016 Prospect League Championship team, outfielder Jordan Branz and pitcher Brian Cherrington. The Grenadiers are an NAIA school that plays in the River States Conference, which also counts WVU-Tech athletics as one of its current members.
The Prospect League is the premier collegiate wood bat summer baseball league in the Midwest. It has been operating in its current form since 2009 while serving the summer baseball needs of top collegiate players. The 2016 Prospect League title won by the Miners was the team's third league championship in the last five seasons.
