Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - Shortstop Sean Miller drilled his second career home run and drove in three runs as the Cedar Rapids Kernels rallied for a 6-4 win Friday over the Beloit Snappers in front of a season-high 4,244 fans at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Beloit (0-2, 32-39) grabbed its first lead in the first inning, 2-0. Michael Martin hit a two-out, two-run single to left field that brought in Trace Loehr and Brett Siddall for the early advantage.

Snappers starting pitcher Michael Murray retired the first eight batters that he faced until Cedar Rapids (2-0, 38-33) broke through and tied the contest in the third inning. Brad Hartong's two-out double extended the frame for Miller, who snuck a game-tying two-run blast inside the left-field foul pole to tie the game at 2-2.

The game remained tied until Skye Bolt put Beloit back in front, 4-2, during the top of the sixth. Siddall and Martin led off with singles and were both in scoring position after a sacrifice bunt from Jesus Lopez. Bolt batted next and lined a two-run single into right field, giving the Snappers another lead.

The Kernels answered with a four-run rally in the seventh inning to take a 6-4 lead. Austin Diemer kicked off the rally with a one-out solo shot to left field. An RBI double later in the inning by J.J. Fernandez tied the contest. Brad Hartong followed by driving in the go-ahead run on a fielder's choice before Miller brought in an insurance run during a sacrifice double play. Cedar Rapids would hold on to its 6-4 edge and defeat Beloit in game two of a four-game series.

Kernels reliever Williams Ramirez (1-1) tossed 2.1 scoreless and hitless innings to earn the victory while Anthony McIver posted a scoreless ninth inning for his third save in as many chances. Beloit's Rob Huber (0-1) was charged for a blown save and a loss, giving up two runs plus an inherited runner tagged to Murray in the seventh inning. Murray tallied a career-high nine strikeouts - six in a row early in his 6.1 innings pitched - but was knocked out a potential win by the Kernels' rally.

This four-game series continues Saturday at 6:35 p.m. with Kernels right-hander Cody Stashak (4-4, 2.73 ERA) starting against Snappers right-hander Dustin Hurlbutt (0-0, 3.60 ERA).
