Laredo Law News Release

LAREDO, Texas – Good things come in small packages, just ask the Laredo Law. Offensive specialist Michael Wakefield has brought a big spark to the expansion Law this year despite being just 5’8” 170 pounds.

“My size is the first thing people notice about me,” said Wakefield. “I’ve been battling that my whole career, but once I get a chance to play they usually talk about my speed and moves.”

Wakefield may be small in stature, but he has terrific strength, bench pressing 225 pounds 25 times. However his bread and butter remains speed, he runs the forty yard dash in 4.3 seconds.

“I like the arena game because I was a sprinter,” said Wakefield. “I ran the 100 meters in track and my first 50 are my fastest, which works well for the inside game. Plus I can cut easier indoors on turf.”

Wakefield started his collegiate career at the University of Pacific in 1996. When the school dropped football he transferred to New Mexico State where he was a receiver and running back from 1997-99. As a senior he was among the top 10 in the nation in kickoff return average at more than 30 yards per return. For the Law, Wakefield has been an electrifying return man, scoring once and constantly setting Laredo up with excellent field position.

“I like returning kicks because I know that you can score at almost any time,” said Wakefield. “The ball bouncing off the net is a little difficult at first, but once you get enough repetitions it becomes easier.”

Wakefield, a San Diego native, played at Lincoln Prep High School (same high school as Marcus Allen and Terrell Davis). He has a B.A. in Psychology and needs just four more classes to finish his Masters degree. Currently he teaches Self Contained Special Education for 6th graders at Ed White Middle School in San Antonio, Texas.

What does the future hold for the LawÂ’s dynamic return man?

“I am looking for a chance to go to the AFL,” said Wakefield. “I was out in Arizona with the Rattlers when Coach Maynard was there. He brought me here to Laredo after I got cut and has given me a chance.”
