Mets Split Series After Marathon Monday Win

KINGSPORT, Tenn.- The Kingsport Mets rebounded to split the four-game series Monday night with the Appalachian League-leading Greeneville Astros after another offensive outburst as the home team took down the Astros 13-7 following a 19-team hits, four of which coming from Wagner Lagrange .

Kingsport (7-10) improved to 5-1 in games where the club scores at least 10 runs while also gaining two games in the standings over the series. The Mets now sit 4.5 games out of first place going into the off day on Tuesday.

The Mets jumped out first for the second consecutive game as Jeremy Vasquez took advantage of consecutive hits to begin the bottom of the first inning with an RBI double to right field. The drive brought in Edgardo Fermin, who led off the frame with a single, as the K-Mets lead early on 1-0 after one inning of play.

Kingsport added another in the third off the third RBI double by Juan Uriarte in the past two games. The latest run-scoring drive was a ball belted to right-center field that plated Wagner Lagrange who doubles prior to lead off the inning. The Mets exited the frame picking up a run off the two hits and led Greeneville 2-0 after three at the ballpark.

Greeneville (12-6) finally responded in the top of the fourth as the visitors plated four runs off four hits and a costly error from short stop Edgardo Fermin to take a 4-2 lead midway through four innings. Of the eight men who came to the plate in the frame, it was RBI singles from Frankeny Fernandez, Joan Mauricio and Reiny Beltre that did the damage while another run was added on an RBI groundout form Roman Garcia.

Tailing for the first time, 4-2 midway through four, the home team rallied for five runs off five hits in the inning to take a three-run lead at 7-4.

Victor Moscote started the charge with a double to deep-center that brought in Dionis Paulino . Rigoberto Terrazas followed four batters later with a run-scoring single to right field. Immediately after, both Jeremy Vasquez and Uriate followed as the former singled in a run while the latter doubled once again to drove in the fifth run of the frame with a two-run two-bagger.

Uriarte has now doubled four times in the past two games while driving in six runs. During the fourth inning, both teams combined to send 18 batters to the plate to score nine runs in a 44 minute time period.

After four innings of play, Kingsport led Greeneville by a score of 7-3.

Following a scoreless fifth, the Astros were at it again in the top of the sixth-scoring three runs to tie the game at seven apiece of four hits in the frame. Both Martin Figueroa and Beltre tallied RBI base knocks in the frame while Fernandez crossed home plate on a wild pitch.

Kingsport responded by breaking the tie ballgame in the bottom of the inning thanks to an RBI double down the left field line form Anthony Dircoie to put the Mets up by a run at 8-7 after six innings of work. Five more runs of insurance crossed the plate an inning later as the Mets outlasted the Astros 13-7 Monday night to clinch the series-split.

It was another offensive outburst for the Kingsport Mets as the offense tallied 13 runs off 19 hits during the victory. Lagrange led the way with four-hits at the plate while Uriarte and Vasquez drove in three runs apiece. Terrazas, Moscote and Dirocie all had multi-RBI days while in total all but two players in the lineup record multi-hit days.

For Greeneville who finished the day with seven runs off eight hits, both Beltre and Fernandez tallied two hits in the loss while the former drove in a team-high two runs. Noel Pinto (0-1) took home the loss after surrendering the lead with three runs in only one-plus innings of work. Joe Cavallaro (1-1) picked up the win after initially blowing the save but rebounding for a solid seventh inning. The hurler tossed two innings of four-hit baseball with three runs surrendered and one strikeout.

Kingsport will head up to Pulaski, Va. Following Tuesday's off day to begin a three-game road series. The next home game and broadcast on the Kingsport Mets Baseball Network will be on Saturday, July 15 against the Johnson City Cardinals at 6:15 p.m.
