Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Memphis Redbirds (43-27) used a clutch two-out rally in the top of the eighth inning to knock off the Round Rock Express (34-37) by a final score of 5-4 on Monday night at Dell Diamond. E-Train C A.J. Jimenez finished 2-4 with a home run and three RBI in the defeat.
Express reliever RHP Sam Wolff (1-1, 0.00) suffered the loss after giving up three unearned runs in the fateful eighth inning. Redbirds RHP Josh Zeid (3-2, 6.07) picked up the win despite giving up a run on three hits in 1.1 innings out of the bullpen.
Neither starter figured into the decision as Round Rock RHP Tyler Wagner issued two runs on three hits in six innings while striking out nine. For the visitors, RHP Jack Flaherty surrendered three runs on five hits in 5.2 frames.
Memphis took an early 2-0 lead in the third inning as 2B Breyvic Valera and LF Randal Grichuk collected singles before a fielding error by 2B Drew Robinson on a double steal attempt moved both runners 90 feet closer to home. After a Rangel Ravelo walk, C Carson Kelly singled to score both Valera and Grichuk.
The E-Train bats then came to life as 1B Ronald Guzman and Jimenez each collected solo home runs over the next two innings.
In the sixth, Flaherty issued a leadoff single to 3B Will Middlebrooks but recovered to record a pair of outs before being removed from the game. With RHP Josh Zeid on to pitch, CF Drew Stubbs singled and RF Preston Beck walked to load the bases. Jimenez then grounded a single through the gap between second base and shortstop, allowing both Middlebrooks and Stubbs to race home to give the Express a 4-2 edge.
Memphis fought back with a two-out rally in the bottom of the eighth. With Wolff on to pitch, DH Luke Voit jumped aboard via a fielding error by E-Train 1B Ronald Guzman. After a Kelly single, 3B Patrick Wisdom worked a walk to load the bases. RF Nick Martini leveled the contest at 4-4 with a two-run single in the next at-bat. SS Alex Mejia then played the role of hero, lining an RBI single to center field to give the Redbirds a 5-4 advantage.
The Express couldn't build a rally of their own in the final two frames as RHP Miguel Socolovich and RHP Josh Lucas teamed up to turn in a pair of perfect innings to preserve the 5-4 win for Memphis.
Round Rock and Memphis conclude their series on Tuesday night. Express LHP Jimmy Reyes (2-1, 2.10) is set to make his first start of the year while the Redbirds plan to send RHP Mike Mayers (4-6, 4.11) to the mound. First pitch at Dell Diamond is set for 7:05 p.m.
