June 10, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1) - Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The New Orleans Zephyrs topped the Memphis Redbirds, 5-4, on Monday evening at AutoZone Park in the opener of a five-game series.
The one-run loss was the club's 12th of the season. All eight position players recorded at least one hit, led by two-hit efforts by Justin Christian and Ryan Jackson.
New Orleans opened the game with a 2-0 advantage after Redbirds starter Maikel Cleto was unable to retire the first four batters of the game. He walked the first batter, his only walk of the game, and then offered up singles to the next three before retiring the side.
Brock Peterson answered with his team-leading 12th homer of the season over the right field wall in the next frame. Oscar Taveras scored on the Peterson blast after reaching on a two-out single.
New Orleans plated runs in back-to-back innings for a 4-2 lead. Matt Downs tripled and scored on a Cleto wild pitch in the fourth before Kevin Kouzmanoff went yard in the fifth.
Kolten Wong hit his fifth homer of the season in the fifth, a solo shot over the right field wall, to bring Memphis within one run.
Kevin Mattison tripled and scored on Jorge Rondon in the seventh to conclude the scoring and give the Zephyrs a much-needed insurance run.
Adron Chambers connected on a one-out, solo home run to bring the 'Birds back within one in the ninth before Chris Hatcher converted his PCL-leading 20th save by retiring Wong and Taveras to end the game.
