Memorial Cup Match-Up a Rarity
March 30, 2009 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Spokane Chiefs News Release
For just the second time in WHL history Memorial Cup Champions from the previous two seasons will face off in the playoffs when the Spokane Chiefs, the 2008 title winners, take on the Vancouver Giants, champions in 2007. The Giants will host games one and two this weekend before the series shifts to Spokane on Tuesday, April 7th and Wednesday, April 8th.
Tickets to games three (ticket D) and four (ticket E) are currently on sale at the Chiefs office by calling (509) 535-PUCK or TicketsWest at (800) 325-SEAT.
With Spokane winning a year after Vancouver's championship it marked the fifth time that WHL franchises brought the Memorial Cup to the west in back-to-back seasons, but only one time previously, 1993, had those two teams met in the playoffs the following year. The Kamloops Blazers, 1992 champions, swept the Chiefs, 1991, in a three game series.
The series will also mark the second straight year Spokane and Vancouver have met in the playoffs. The Chiefs eliminated the Giants in the second round last season in a six game series.
