Melotakis, Buxton Lead Kernels to 6-2 Win Over Cougars

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kernels defeated the Kane County Cougars on Monday afternoon, 6-2. Mason Melotakis and Byron Buxton led the way for the Kernels with Melotakis holding the Cougars scoreless through 7 innings and Buxton plating 3 of the 6 runs. Buxton made a diving catch in deep left-center in the 3rd inning to take a hit away from Kane County's David Bote.

Adam Brett Walker doubled home J.D. Williams, who walked to leadoff the 4th, to put the Kernels up 1-0.

In the 5th, the Kernels recorded their biggest offensive inning of the day. The first four batters reached base and Byron Buxton brought 3 of the 4 runs home on a double off the left centerfield wall. Tyler Grimes, Michael Quesada, and Candido Pimentel all scored on the extra-base hit. Buxton later scored on an RBI single by Jorge Polanco, pushing the Kernels lead to 5-0 after 5.

Buxton finished the contest 3-for-4 with a home run short of the cycle, 3 RBI, and a run scored. He also had a highlight-reel catch in center in the 2nd inning off the bat of Jeimer Candelario. Buxton sprawled full out on the warning track to make the diving play.

Kane County pushed across one run in both of the final two innings. Oliver Zapata scored on a Dan Vogelbach fielder's choice in the 8th and Rock Shoulders led off the 9th with a double and scored on an RBI groundout by Carlos Escobar.

The Kernels tacked on one run in the 8th as well via a Travis Harrison RBI double that scored Walker. Walker finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and stolen base and Harrison went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Grimes finished 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.

Kernels starter Mason Melotakis threw 7 solid innings, allowing no runs on 4 hits while walking 3 and striking out 2. Melotakis (6-2) now leads the team in wins. Reliever Alex Muren finished the game with 2 innings to his name. Muren allowed 2 runs on 2 hits, walking 1 and striking out 1.

Pierce Johnson pitched 4.2 innings in the start for Kane County. Johnson (4-5) allowed 5 runs on 7 hits while walking 2 and striking out 4. Lendy Castillo finished the game for the Cougars, striking out 4 in 3.1 innings.
