Mejia Shuts Down SeaWolves

The SeaWolves ran into a one of the best starting pitching performances they've seen all season as they were shut out by the Richmond Flying Squirrels, 1-0, on Monday afternoon.

Adalberto Mejia and Anthony Fernandez dueled in a scoreless battle until Richmond broke through in the fifth. Myles Schroder led off with a single and stole second. With one out, Eliezer Zambrano singled home Schroder for the lone run of the game.

With two outs in the ninth, Jeff McVaney singled to keep the game alive. Richmond summoned Tyler Rogers who retired JaCoby Jones on a ground ball to short for the final out ,earning his fifth save in as many chances.

Fernandez (0-1) worked six solid innings in a quality start. He allowed one run on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

Mejia (2-1) was the story of the day. The lefty hurled 8.2 scoreless frames allowing four hits with one walk while striking out a season-high 10 batters.

Jose Valdez and Joe Mantiply combined to keep Richmond off the scoreboard for the final three innings of the game.

The SeaWolves remain at home as they take on the Binghamton Mets (New York Mets) on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. LHP Josh Turley (0-2, 9.00 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Robert Gsellman (1-4, 2.75 ERA).
