Media Advisory Five Former Stars Make NHL Opening-Day Rosters

Lincoln, Neb. - Five former Lincoln Stars were named to NHL opening-day rosters ahead of puck drop for the 2016-2017 season.

David Backes, Jared Boll, Ryan Dzingel, Jimmy Hayes and Chris VandeVelde will represent the Lincoln Stars in the NHL's 100th anniversary season. The USHL had a record-setting 107 USHL alumni on NHL rosters.

Backes is set to make his debut with the Boston Bruins after spending the last 10 seasons with the St. Louis Blues. He enters his 11th NHL season with 460 points in 727 games. Backes attended Minnesota State University.

Hayes returns to the Bruins after finishing last season with 29 points in 75 games. Hayes has logged 95 points in 243 NHL games played since finishing his collegiate career at Boston College.

Boll will skate with the Anaheim Ducks after recording 62 points and 1195 penalty minutes in nine seasons with the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Dzingel will rejoin the Ottawa Senators after earning a call-up from the Binghamton Senators (AHL) last season. The former Ohio State Buckeye had nine points in 30 NHL games.

VandeVelde will return to the Philadelphia Flyers for the third consecutive season. The University of North Dakota alum has 33 points in 197 NHL games.
