San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls announced Monday that left-winger Cody McLeod has been assigned by the American Hockey League's Lowell Lock Monsters. The Gulls also announced Monday that Sean Starke, Michael Mendres and Justin Silver have been released, lowering the roster to 21 players.
McLeod, 21, comes to San Diego after spending training camp with both Lowell and the AHL's Providence Bruins. The 6-foot-2-inch, 210-pound rookie forward from Binscarth, Manitoba made his professional debut last season with the United Hockey League's Adirondack Frostbite, appearing in one regular season and five playoff games.
Prior to turning pro, McLeod spent four years playing juniors with the Portland Winter Hawks in the Western Hockey League. During his four-year tenure with Portland, he tallied 137 points (69g, 68a) and 661 penalty minutes in 257 games. McLeod led Portland last season with 195 penalty minutes and ranked second on the club with 60 points (tied for first with 31 goals).
The Gulls also announced that forwards Brad Wanchulak and Alex Rogosheske, who were originally non-roster tryouts, have both signed contracts for the 2005-06 season. Wanchulak spent the last four years at Notre Dame and Rogosheske played the last three years at Bowling Green State University.
Starke spent last season with the UHL's Kalamazoo Kings, recording 39 points (19g, 20a) in 68 games. Mendres did not play professionally last season. Silver appeared in three games for the Gulls last season.
