Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Waterloo, Iowa - Three seasons with the Waterloo Black Hawks and three more at Boston College prepared defenseman Ian McCoshen for the moment Monday when he agreed to a three-year NHL contract with the Florida Panthers.

In 2013, Florida selected McCoshen with the 31st overall pick of the NHL Draft, the first choice during the second round. That summer, the 6-3 Faribault, Minnesota, native was between his final year with the Black Hawks and his freshman season with the Eagles.

McCoshen arrived in Waterloo at the outset of the 2010/11 campaign. He went on to appear in 150 regular season games, with a United States Hockey League career plus/minus mark of +30. From the blue line, McCoshen accumulated 70 points, including 19 goals. With 44 points in 2012/13, he ranked second among league defensemen. In addition, McCoshen helped the Black Hawks reach the 2012 Clark Cup Championship Series and skated for Waterloo in Omsk, Russia, during the 2012 Junior Club World Cup.

At Boston College, he was part of an Eagles program which reached the Frozen Four twice. McCoshen helped BC punch their ticket to the 2014 final weekend by scoring the winning goal during a regional victory over Massachusetts-Lowell. It was one of 17 goals and 50 points he accumulated during the course of 110 NCAA appearances. McCoshen also twice skated for the United States National Junior Team at the IIHF World Junior Championships during his time at Boston College.

Two other former Hawks defensemen have reached the NHL after stays at Chestnut Hill: Andrew Alberts and Patrick Wey.

McCoshen is one of several Black Hawks chosen by the Panthers during the NHL Draft. The group also includes former Waterloo skaters Eddie Wittchow, John Lee, and Zach Bearson. In addition, Brett Olson spent the last two seasons under contract with Florida while playing for the organization's American Hockey League affiliates.

Last season, McCoshen's Waterloo teammate Vince Hinostroza made his NHL debut with the Chicago Blackhawks. Other Hawks alumni who appeared in the NHL during 2015/16 were Joe Pavelski (San Jose Sharks), Craig Smith (Nashville Predators), and J.T. Brown (Tampa Bay Lightning).
