McCollum Stops 30 Shots as Griffins Fall 2-1 to San Antonio
March 22, 2016 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Grand Rapids Griffins News Release
SAN ANTONIO - Tom McCollum turned aside 30 shots, but his individual seven-game winning streak was snapped as the Grand Rapids Griffins fell to the San Antonio Rampage 2-1 on Tuesday at AT&T Center.
Spencer Martin also stopped 30 shots as the Rampage swept the season series against Grand Rapids. The Griffins return to Van Andel Arena for their 12th and final regular season meeting against the Lake Erie Monsters on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Alex Belzile started the scoring for San Antonio (26-33-8-0) at the 12:29 mark of the opening period. A wrist shot by Duncan Siemens from the left point missed the net to the short side, but Belzile played the carom off the end boards near the right post and tucked the puck underneath the crossbar.
Martin Frk evened the score for the Griffins (41-22-1-1) with 2:26 left in the first. After Ryan Sproul's wrist shot from the right point was blocked in front, Tyler Bertuzzi and Frk both had rebounds saved by Martin. Frk then gathered the puck behind the net and banked a shot off the San Antonio netminder's right skate and in for his 26th of the campaign and fourth goal in his last five games.
Cheek restored the Rampage's lead 2:02 into the middle frame. Garry Nunn's pass from the right half-boards reached Cheek at the right circle. After whiffing on his initial effort, Cheek walked into the slot and placed a shot inside the left post.
The Griffins' best chance to tie the game came with 4:16 to play in the second. After Xavier Ouellet's stretch pass reached Andy Miele for a breakaway, Miele moved in close and faked a shot on his forehand before moving to the backhand only to be denied by the glove of Martin.
San Antonio finished 0-for-5 on the power play as the Grand Rapids penalty kill went a perfect 9-for-9 in the two-game set. The Griffins were unable to convert on four opportunities.
Three Stars: 1. SA Cheek (game-winning goal); 2. SA Martin (W, 30 saves); 3. SA Belzile (goal)
Notes: Grand Rapids is 16-6-1-1 (.708) in one-goal games and 30-5-0-0 (.833) when giving up two or fewer goals this season.
