Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
NORWICH, CT (August 27, 2013) - The offense that was lacking in Hudson Valley's 4-1 loss on Monday night arrived in several bunches on Tuesday night at Dodd Stadium. In hoping to avoid a series defeat, the Renegades watched two separate leads disappear in the first four innings against the Tigers. As they showed over the weekend, this team has the ability to put together one big inning to carry them for an entire ballgame. This time it was the sixth inning, when eight Renegades came to the plate and produced four runs on four hits in what was ultimately a 7-4 victory to salvage a split in the first two games of the tilt.
Ryan McChesney got the start behind the plate for just the fifth time all year, and reached a memorable milestone in the second inning when his towering drive down the right field line stayed fair for his first professional home run. Two batters later, James Harris singled off righthanded starter Chase Edwards, who was looking for his first decision in his eighth start of the season. With two outs, the Renegades perfectly executed a hit-and-run, and John Alexander's line drive to the left field wall scored Harris to make it 2-0.
After Ben Verlander led off the bottom of the second inning with a solo shot of his own off Ben Griset, McChesney was the catalyst again in the top of the third. Ty Young walked on five pitches with two outs before Johnny Field singled him to second. The Renegades catcher lashed a base hit into right field to score Young and make it a two run game once again.
Unfortunately, the next three runs belonged to the Tigers, who quickly tied the score in the third. Two straight singles by Curt Powell and Austin Schotts opened the inning for Kasey Coffman. He sent a groundball to first for Alexander, whose throw to first sailed over Griset (3-3) and back behind the plate, scoring both runners to tie the game at three. Connecticut used the longball for its final run in the fourth thanks to the Chris Taladay's first professional home run, a solo shot to deep right that broke the tie and made it 4-3.
In the sixth, the Renegades put their feet to the pedal and never looked back against lefthanded reliever Ryan Beck. Patrick Blair's leadoff single allowed Harris to double him home to tie the score at four apiece. After advancing to third on the throw to the plate, Harris scored on an RBI groundout by Alexander, as the 'Gades retook the lead at 5-4. In total, eight batters came to the plate in the inning, and two more runs were plated up on an RBI double from Darryl George and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Young. Connecticut brought the tying run to the plate in the eighth against Tyler Gauthier, who got Schotts to ground into a force out with runners at first and second. In the ninth, Corey MacDonald earned his second save of the year despite a one out single by Verlander.
NOTES: Gauthier threw a season-high three scoreless innings of relief after having not thrown more than an inning and two thirds in any of his first six appearances...MacDonald's last save came with three shutout innings in a 4-2 win in Staten Island on June 22...Alexander has eight RBIs in his last four games and is now second on the team with 24...McChesney's last multi-hit and multi-RBI game came on June 18 in the second game of the season in Aberdeen...Ariel Soriano replaced Blair in the seventh inning after he had gone 1-for-3 at the plate.
The series wraps up Wednesday night at 7:05 PM. Derek Loera (2-1, 2.81 ERA) will make his third start of the season against the Tigers Austin Pritcher (3-3, 3.02 ERA). ). The Renegades' final homestand begins next Saturday night against the Staten Island Yankees at 7:05 PM.
