Mazza Makes West Virginia Look Powerless

Augusta, GA-With the game scoreless in the bottom of the seventh, Skyler Ewing on first, Sandro Fabian at the plate, and one out. Fabian hit a double to score Ewing and put the GreenJackets on the board. Jacob Heyward followed with a single to score Fabian to make it 2-0. It was all the GreenJackets would need in a 2-0 victory over the West Virginia Power Monday Night at Lake Olmstead Stadium. It was also the GreenJackets third win in two days.
The star of the game was Domenic Mazza who pitched seven innings of shutout ball. He recorded six strikeouts and gave up only four hits. He ran into trouble early on when he gave up back to back two out singles in the first and saw the first two Power hitters reach base in the second. He was able to get out of both jams and settle in after that.
"At the beginning I had to battle threw it," said Mazza. "They put some good ABs together. I was able to make some good pitches when I needed to early on. I was able to make the adjustment and start using all my pitches in the strike zone to get them out quicker."
For the Power, Eduardo Vera pitched six innings of shutout ball. He struck out four and allowed four hits. He faced the minimum in every inning accept the fourth.
For the GreenJackets, Wilson Santos and Patrick Ruotolo each recorded a strikeout in a shutout inning of relief work to close out the GreenJackets victory.
The GreenJackets will be back in action Tuesday night for game two of the four game series vs. the Power. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm with the gates opening at 6:00pm. It is Tuesday Brewsday featuring half price beverages all night long, Bank Challenge Night featuring all the CSRA Banks and Credit Unions, and Taco Tuesday presented by Tin Lizzy's Cantina.
Stephen Woods (3-6, 3.49) will start on the mound for the GreenJackets against Luis Escobar (6-2, 4.12) for the Power.
