MAYHEM GAME RECAP: Mayhem Defeat Fayetteville Marksmen 5-2 In
October 14, 2017 - SPHL (SPHL) - Macon Mayhem News Release
MACON, GA- The Macon Mayhem scored goals in all three periods in tonight's preseason 5-2 win over the Fayetteville Marksmen.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mayhem got the hot start in this game, as John Gustafsson scored his second goal of the preseason on a wrist shot over the right shoulder of Fayetteville goaltender Matt Zenzola. Just a couple minutes later, the Marksmen answered with a goal from Travis Jeke. Macon would get the lead once again in the period, however. Jamie Hill sent a saucer pass to John Siemer, who deked Zenzola and snuck it past his left pad to give the Mayhem the 2-1 lead.
Only one goal was scored in the second period, which came on the power play off the stick of Dennis Sicard. He took the original shot and was able to follow up his own shot to put the rebound home.
Macon was able to get an insurance goal early in the third period. Stephen Pierog found the puck off the back boards and tucked it past Fayetteville goaltender Peter Di Salvo. After the Marksmen answered, Dylan Denomme was able to put the game away with a top-shelf goal. He was the recipient of a nice passing play with Pierog and Stathis Soumelidis for the final goal of the 5-2 Mayhem win.
NOTABLE STATS
The Mayhem had six different players record two points in the game tonight. Jamie Hill recorded two assists, as he played on a line with John Gustafsson (one goal, one assist) and John Siemer (one goal, one assist). Dylan Denomme had a goal and an assist playing on a line with Stathis Soumelidis (two assists) and Stephen Pierog (one goal, one assist).
Returning goaltender Troy Passingham started in net for Macon, saving 17 of the 18 shots he faced. Rookie net minder Charlie Finn replaced him halfway through the game, but did not face as much action as Passingham, as he saved five of the six shots he faced.
KERR'S COMMENTS
"Obviously in the preseason you are playing without much practice, new guys in the system, and guys just getting their chemistry back together, but I thought we showed a lot of good things tonight and this preseason. We scored five goals both games, showing how deep and talented we are up front. I'm excited to see how we can play during the regular season with more practice time and as guys get to know each other better."
