Mayhem Game Notes: Mayhem at Peoria Rivermen
March 23, 2018 - SPHL (SPHL)
Macon Mayhem News Release
LAST GAME PLAYED:
The Mayhem won their second game in a row their last time out, defeating the Fayetteville Marksmen 4-1 on the road. Peoria split a pair of road games last weekend against the Pensacola Ice Flyers, with their last game being a 2-1 victory.
SCOUTING THE RIVERMEN:
Peoria has been one of the best teams in the league all season, and that has not changed recently. They have surpassed the Mayhem over the past couple of weeks as the highest- scoring team in the league, averaging 3.84 goals per game. They also rank second in the SPHL in goals against per game at 2.88. Both facets of their special teams rank in the top half of the league, as they sport the second-best power play at 20.18% and the fourth-best penalty kill at 83.61%. They have been very hot over the past couple of months, as they have gone 11-3-3 in 17 games since the start of February. Over that stretch, they are averaging 4.00 goals per game and are allowing 2.94 goals per game. Starting goaltender Tyler Parks has returned from loan to the ECHL, which should give Peoria a boost. In 14 games this season, Parks is 10-3-1 with a 2.64 GAA and a .918 SV%.
POWER SURGE:
Heading into March 10th against the Huntsville Havoc, the Mayhem had gone three games without a power play goal and had converted on just five of their past 66 man-advantage opportunities. In their four games since then, they have scored at least one power play goal in each game. After going three-for four on the power play last night against Roanoke, they have converted on seven of their last 16 PP opportunities (43.8% conversion rate). The Mayhem's streaking power play faces a tough matchup this weekend, as the Rivermen rank fourth in the SPHL in penalty kill percentage at 83.6%.
BACK LIKE TIGER WOODS:
Mayhem captain Daniel Gentzler was on a prolonged scoring drought heading into the March 10th game against Huntsville. He had not scored an SPHL goal dating back to November 11th, but he is now riding a four-game goal scoring streak. He has been a huge part of the Mayhem's streaking power play, as three of his four goals have come on the man advantage. Gentzler now has eight goals, 27 assists and 35 points in 42 games this season.
BACK IN ACTION:
The Mayhem stay in Peoria on Saturday to take on the Rivermen for the third and final time in the regular season.
