May Madness of Ball Park Food
May 9, 2013 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston RiverDogs News Release
CHARLESTON, SC - Minor League Baseball is synonymous with thinking of crazy and wacky ideas to lure fans into ballparks all across America. Beginning Wednesday, May 15, Minor League Baseball is at it again as they launch their first fan voting promotion of the season, titled MiLB.com #foodfight.
The foodfight initiative pairs 64 MiLB teams against each other, but they will be split in four categories, similar to the NCAA Basketball March Madness bracket. The First Course begins on May 15 with 64 concession items divided into four groups : Gut Busters, Hogs 'n Dogs, Scrumptious Sandwiches and Local Legends.
Your Charleston RiverDogs have been placed in the "Hogs n Dogs" portion of the bracket, where they feature their famous Pickle Dog. The RiverDogs will go head-to-head against 15 other teams in their bracket including SAL opponents Hickory Crawdads and Lexington Legends. The Crawdads feature their "Clawlossa 1" while the Legends highlight "The Backwards Bourbon Sammie."
One can visit www.milb.com to view the complete bracket of all 64 concession items from around the minors. When fans go to the #foodfight landing page they will be able to vote for one of the items in each of the four categories on each ballot. Fans can submit as many ballots they would like. Additionally, fans will be able to vote via Twitter by using the hashtag #foodfight. Those votes will aggregate into the item's final total. The first round of voting concludes on Wednesday, May 29.
"The primary goals of this initiative are to have fun and raise awareness of minor league baseball around the country," said RiverDogs General Manager Dave Echols. "We know that our fans love our pickle dogs. We now hope they'll take a moment and vote for it."
The top vote-getter in each group will advance to the Final Round (a.k.a. The Main Course), which begins on Thursday, May 30. A similar round of voting will continue for one week, with the #foodfight champion being named on the afternoon of Thursday, June 6.
There is a sweepstakes included in this promotion which awards a grand prize winner airfare, hotel accommodations and tickets to visit the winning team and sample the winning food item (paid for by MLBAM/BIRCO).
The RiverDogs are home until Wednesday for a seven-game homestand that features both the Hickory Crawdads and the Savannah Sand Gnats. For more information, or to purchase tickets, call the Box Office at (843)577-DOGS (3647), or visit www.riverdogs.com.
