Mavs Win Fourth Straight Game in Eight Round Shootout, 2-1 over Denver

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - It took eight rounds in a shootout for the Missouri Mavericks (18-11-4) to win their fourth straight game and defeat the Denver Cutthroats, 2-1, Saturday night at Independence Events Center. The Mavericks moved into third place in the Central Hockey League with 40 points and a .606 win percentage. Mavericks' forward Colt King earned the game-winning goal in the shootout and added an assist for a two-point game, and goaltender Mike Clemente stopped 20 of 21 shots and five of eight shots in the shootout for his CHL-high 15th win of the season.. The game was the Mavericks' fourth straight sellout and sixth sellout overall this season at Independence Events Center.
Missouri controlled much of the first period and finally broke the scoreless tie at the 15:21 mark. John-Scott Dickson made a crossing pass to Trevor Kell who one-timed the puck past Cutthroats' goaltender Kent Patterson. Mavericks' forward Colt King earned the second assist on the play and Missouri took the 1-0 lead all the way into the third period.
The second period was filled with penalties, but neither team was able to light the lamp. The Mavericks put up 17 shots on net compared to 10 for the Cutthroats, but Missouri couldn't extend their lead.
Nearly 13 minutes into third period the Cutthroats scored the equalizer. Mike Towns scored his first of the season on assists from Luke Fulghum and Joel Chouinard and the teams were tied, 1-1. Neither team was able to get another puck over the goal line until the shootout. Denver took an early lead in the shootout, but the Mavericks answered and scored four goals on eight shots to secure the victory. Missouri is now 2-1 in shootouts this season.
The Mavericks close out their five-game home stand with a pair of games next weekend at Independence Events Center. On Friday, Jan. 11, Missouri hosts the Tulsa Oilers, and on Saturday, Jan. 12, the Quad City Mallards come to Independence.
