Kansas City Mavericks News Release

INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees defeated the Missouri Mavericks 4-1 Tuesday night in front of 4,814 fans at Independence Events Center. The Killer Bees, led by the goaltending of Wylie Rogers, ended the Mavericks five-game home win streak and four-game win streak overall. Rogers stopped 32 of 33 shots for the Bees and four different players scored goals for Rio Grande Valley (22-25-9). Mike Burgoyne scored the only goal for the Mavericks (28-24-4) who remain in fifth place in the Northern Conference just one point below the Mississippi RiverKings.

The Killer Bees took the lead at the 13:15 mark of the first period on Grant Goeckner-Zoeller's 24th goal of the season. The Bees' leading scorer took a pass from Stacey Bauman and beat Mavs' goaltender Gerry Festa. At 18:06, Zak McClellan made it a 2-0 game on assists from Aaron Lee and Sean Muncy on what proved to be the game-winning goal. The Bees took the two-goal lead into the intermission despite Missouri winning the battle in shots at 16-10.

Neither team was able to light the lamp in the second period. Rio Grande Valley edged the Mavericks in shots at 12-9, but the score remained 2-0 in favor of the Killer Bees. It marked just the fourth time this season Missouri was held scoreless after two periods.

Missouri was forced to kill penalties for the first six minutes of the third period after Karl Sellan was whistled for a double minor at the end of the second period. Burgoyne then took a hooking penalty just as Sellan exited the penalty box giving the Bees a third straight power play to start the third period. Missouri killed all three penalties, but Daymen Rycroft made it 3-0 when he banged home a rebound at the 9:08 mark. Lee made it 4-0 at 13:56 when he snapped a shot that beat Festa stick side. It was a shorthanded goal on a two-on-one and all but ended the Mavericks' chances.

Burgoyne scored at the 15:05 mark of the period to break Rogers' shutout. The five-on-three power play goal was assisted by Jordan Foreman and Todd Paul and ended the scoring at 4-1.

Missouri finished 1 for 9 on the power play and killed all eight of the Bees' chances. Rio Grande Valley outshot the Mavericks 35-33 and finished the season 3-0-0 against Missouri.

The Mavericks will look to bounce back when they take on the Colorado Eagles Friday night at Independence Events Center at 7:05 p.m. It's the second and final $1 hot dog night and tickets are available by calling (866) 443-8849 or visit www.MissouriMavericks.com for more information.
