Mavericks Set for Teddy Bear Toss Night
December 1, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, MO (Dec. 1, 2015) - The Missouri Mavericks annual Teddy Bear Toss, presented by KC 102.1-KC's Christmas Station, will be held on Saturday, Dec. 5 at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena. All donations will be distributed to deserving families through Community Services League (CSL) and Friends of Special People as a part of their holiday initiatives to spread cheer and provide presents to the individuals they serve.
Over the past six seasons the Mavericks have collected more than ten thousand teddy bears and stuffed animals for local children in need. Fans are encouraged to bring new or gently used (clean) teddy bears and stuffed animals to the game on Saturday to be thrown onto the ice when the Mavericks score their first goal of the night against the Wichita Thunder. All donations should be wrapped in plastic bags before thrown onto the ice.
Community Services League (CSL) hosts an annual week-long "Christmas Shop" offering less fortunate families an opportunity to pick out holiday gifts, and decorations. Last year, CSL assisted more than 1,500 families (roughly 6,000 people) at their "Christmas Shop." The Missouri Mavericks have been a partner of CSL since the franchise's first season in 2009.
Friends of Special People serves children with mental and/or physical disabilities; a mission that began in 1990 with Joseph J. Brocato, founder, playing Santa Claus for children with special needs. At the annual Christmas party attendees are given "goodie bags" filled with holiday spirit. Each bag will include a teddy bear donated from the Mavericks game this Saturday night. The event, scheduled for December 14, is expected to host 900-1,000 children of various ages.
