Mavericks Fall in First Visit of the Season to Wichita

Kansas City Mavericks News Release

WICHITA, Kan. - The Missouri Mavericks dropped the first game of the "Visit Wichita, Visit Independence Cup" to the Wichita Thunder on Friday night by a 4-1 count. The Mavericks saw their record fall to 0-3-0 ahead of their home opener on Saturday against the Indy Fuel.

After getting shut out for the first time in over 18 months last Sunday, the Mavericks got exactly the start they were looking for on Friday night. A Bryce Aneloski point shot was kicked out by Wichita goalie Scott Greenham, but the rebound laid up in front for Darren Nowick to jam home for his first goal at 5:33 of the first. Dmitrii Sergeev garnered the secondary assist for his first professional point. Wichita answered back just over 10 minutes later on the power play when Chris Rumble tipped home a Jack Rodewald point shot. Eamon McAdam made his second consecutive start in goal and stopped 12 first period shots.

Wichita used a quick flurry in the second period to grab control of the game. The first marker of the period came just 34 seconds in when Vincent Arseneau scored on a shorthanded rush and the second came 2:15 later. It was Rodewald putting a shot past McAdam this time to earn his second point of the night. The Mavericks had two power play chances in the second, along with three in the first, but were unable to convert and headed into the third trailing by a pair.

The Mavericks were in good position to chip away at the Thunder's lead early in the third period thanks to their sixth power play of the night. The Thunder, though, thwarted any potential momentum by converting a Mavericks turnover into their second shorthanded goal of the night. Matt DeBlouw was fed on the doorstep by Alex Krushelnyski and tapped it past McAdam for his first goal of the season. Tempers flared consistently following DeBlouw's goal as the teams combined for 25 penalty minutes over the final 10:32 of the game. A majority of that time was given to Triston Grant who earned a spearing major and game misconduct.

McAdam took his second loss of the season while stopping 29 of 33 shots. The Mavericks ended the night 0-for-8 on the power play and 2-for-3 on the penalty kill.

Mark your calendars! The Mavericks hit the ice for Opening Night on Saturday, October 22 at 7:05 p.m. against the Indy Fuel.
