Kansas City Mavericks News Release
MOLINE, Illinois - The Missouri Mavericks (7-8-2) bounced back and defeated the Quad City Mallards, 3-1, Saturday night at i wireless Center. Mavericks' newly acquired forward Podge Turnbull had two goals and one assist and Missouri won their third game in their last four outings. Mavericks' goaltender Mike Clemente stopped 26 of 27 shots and backstopped a Mavericks' defense that killed all eight of the Mallards' power play opportunities. The Mavericks continue their four-game road trip in Tulsa on Tuesday, December 4 at 7:05 p.m.
"Great team effort, we had defensemen playing forward because of short numbers" said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "Clemmer (Mike Clemente) made some hug saves in net and (Podge) Turnbull had a great offensive night. The three minute five-on-three penalty kill preserved the win for us."
The teams skated to a scoreless first period and they were also tied in shots at nine each. The scoreless period marked the fifth straight period in which the Mavericks were held without a goal.
John-Scott Dickson finally unlocked the scoreless tie at the 11:02 mark of the second period when he lifted a wrist shot past the glove of Mallards' goaltender John Murray. Evan Vossen and Turnbull assisted on the play and the goal ended a scoreless drought of 111:37. The Mavericks took a 2-0 lead just over three minutes later on Turnbull's first goal with the Mavericks. From behind the net, Sebastien Thinel fed Turnbull who redirected the puck past a sprawled goaltender. Mavs' forward Andrew Courtney also assisted on the play, but the Mavericks couldn't hold on to the two-goal lead for long. Quad City forward Mike Stinziani cut the Mavericks lead in half at the 16:34 mark of the second period.
Multiple penalties were called on the Mavericks over the first half of the third period giving the Mallards multiple five-on-three power play opportunities. The Mavericks were able to kill all of the power plays and eventually take a 3-1 lead. Turnbull scored a highlight reel goal at the 15:14 mark. Turnbull split the Mallards defense with a quick stick and then beat Murray over his shoulder to give the Mavericks a two-goal lead. Defenseman Blake Forsyth assisted on the insurance goal for the Mavericks, and they held on for the 3-1 win.
Missouri killed all eight of the Mallards' power play opportunities, and the Mavericks finished 0-for-5 on the power play.
The Mavericks return home on Saturday, December 8 and they will host Quad City again. The first 2,500 fans in the door will receive a free puck courtesy of Santa Fe Glass.
