Marrero's Double the Difference in Win

July 11, 2017 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Clearwater Threshers News Release

Emmanuel Marrero broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the eighth inning on Monday, driving a two-run double to the track in right to lead Clearwater to a 3-1 win over the Dunedin Blue Jays at Spectrum Field.

Clearwater (47-40, 9-8) salvaged the series finale to earn the split of the four-game set against Dunedin (43-44, 9-9).

Ranger Suarez worked four scoreless innings in his Clearwater debut, permitting just three hits and two walks while striking out seven. He exited after making 86 pitches, 57 for strikes.

Over the last three games, Clearwater starting pitchers have struck out 25 batters in 17 innings. The 16 strikeouts total matched a season-high, as Threshers pitchers reached that mark for the second time in three days.

Cornelius Randolph drew a walk in the eighth inning to keep his on-base streak alive, extending it to 22-consecutive games. His streak is tied for the third-longest in the Florida State League this season.

After a storm delayed the start for just over an hour, Suarez struck out Cavan Biggio to kick off a perfect first inning.

The 21-year-old retired the first eight batters he faced and allowed just two baserunners through three innings, before a Lourdes Guriel single and Max Pentecost double opened the fourth inning.

Suarez induced a big strikeout of Juan Kelly, before issuing a walk to Jake Thomas to load the bases. The lefty then struck out JC Cardenas on a changeup and got Connor Panas to go down swinging to end the threat and strand the bases loaded.

Conor Fisk limited the Threshers to just two hits and a walk in seven strong innings for the Blue Jays, striking out a season-high nine batters before giving way to Adonys Cardona (3-6).

Jose Antquera got the rally going with a one-out single through the right side, and Mark Laird worked his way aboard with a walk. After a wild pitch moved them both into scoring position, Marrero came through with a deep double to right to score both runners and break the Threshers out in front, 2-0.

After Dan Lietz took over on the hill, a wild pitch permitted Marrero to cross and make it 3-0.

Luke Leftwich twirled three hitless innings in relief of Suarez, striking out five, before Jeff Singer (5-2) finished off the final two. The Blue Jays lone run came when a sinking liner got by Carlos Duran in right for a Panas triple in the ninth, and Biggio brought him home with a sacrifice fly.

The Threshers will be off on Tuesday, before welcoming in the Bradenton Marauders for a three-game set. The series kicks off on Camp Day with a 10:30 a.m. first pitch on Wednesday morning, when Jacob Waguespack (5-3) will take the hill. The game will be broadcast live on threshersbaseball.com starting at 10:15 a.m
