Marlins Bounce Back, Win In Petersburg

June 8, 2011 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Morehead City Marlins News Release

Morehead City, N.C. - The Morehead City Marlins quickly rebounded from Monday night's loss in Hampton, Virginia by trouncing the Petersburg Generals 7-1 Tuesday evening. The victory bumps the Marlins up to a 3-6 record.

The Marlins jumped off to a 6-0 lead after three innings, deflated the Generals' spirits and hung on for the win. Petersburg moves to a record of 1-5 after the loss.

Plenty of offensive firepower helped the Marlins earn the much needed win. First baseman Zach Stephens went 3-for-5 at the plate with three doubles, two runs batted in, and three runs scored. He now leads the team in nearly every offensive category, including batting average (.333), RBIs (9), runs scored (5), and slugging percentage (.593). Michael Garcia, Adam Norton, and Ethan Santora rounded up two hits apiece, as well, each given four at-bats.

Morehead City's pitching staff performed very well, also. Starting pitcher Dario Santangelo was impressive in his second appearance of the season for the Marlins, throwing for five innings and giving up one run on two hits. Jim Foster followed up with 2.2 scoreless innings of his own, and Tyler Moore finished the game facing four batters and retiring them consecutively.

The Marlins trek to Wilson's Fleming Stadium to challenge the Tobs on Wednesday, and on Thursday they play host to the Fayetteville SwampDogs for the second time in less than a week. The home game will be the first Pepsi Thirsty Thursday of the season, and Time Warner Cable will present a Marlins seat cushion giveaway. Gates open at 6 p.m., and the game is scheduled to begin at 7:05 p.m.
