Marlies Outlast IceCaps

St. John's IceCaps News Release

ST. JOHN'S, NL - The IceCaps battled hard but could not complete the comeback as the Toronto Marlies topped St. John's 3-2 on Sunday afternoon.

Just like last night, the IceCaps kicked off the scoring early with an unassisted tally from Stefan Matteau. Matteau has now scored four goals this season, three of which came on an empty net. Kasperi Kapanen tied it up for the Marlies late in the first. Brendan Leipsic followed up with the go-ahead tally with forty seconds left in the first frame, and just 23 seconds later, Kapanen struck again with his second marker of the afternoon to give Toronto a 3-1 lead.

Chris Terry potted his fifth of the season (assisted by Sven Andrighetto and Mark Barberio) in the second period to pull the IceCaps within one. A goal from Michael McCarron was called off later in the game for a high-stick, and St. John's was unable to sneak the puck behind Marlies netminder Garret Sparks to send the game to overtime. IceCaps goaltender Charlie Lindgren made 28 saves in the first loss of his pro-career.

The IceCaps head on a six-game road trip before returning home to Mile One Centre for Military Appreciation Weekend on November 25th and 26th. The IceCaps will be debuting their new Royal Newfoundland Regiment Tribute Jerseys as they take on the Providence Bruins.
