Mannino stops 33 shots to earn his first professional shut-out

Worcester, Mass. - It takes three periods to earn a shutout and most of the time in a rookie goaltender's career it takes longer than three contests to earn, but tonight, Peter Mannino made 33 saves to shut-out the Worcester Sharks by the score of 2-0. Tim Jackman contributed with a power-play tally and Sean Bentivoglio's short-handed goal were more then enough to help the Sound Tigers to their fifth victory of the season.
Mannino started in goal for the Sound Tigers and in the first, he held the fort making 15 saves. The Sound Tigers were only able to muster six shots on Worcester starter, Thomas Greiss with two of the better chances coming off the stick of Jeremy Colliton. Defenseman Jamie Fraser led a breakout out of the Sound Tigers' zone and beat a few Shark defensemen into the offensive zone. Fraser sent a cross-ice pass to Colliton in front where he tipped the puck over Greiss' pad but the Worcester net-minder was able to catch the puck in his glove to keep the game scoreless at the end of 20 minutes of play.
While on the power-play with about eight minutes gone by in the middle frame, the Sound Tigers were able to take the 1-0 lead. Mannino started the breakout behind the net where Brett Skinner collected the puck and skated out of the zone. Skinner made a quick pass to Jackman at the right wing where he came in and snapped a shot off the far post and past Greiss for his third goal of the season and second of the weekend. Skinner's assist extends his assist-a-game streak to five games and gives him eight on the season.
In the third it was the Sound Tigers' penalty-kill creating the offense as Tomas Marcinko and Bentivoglio combined for the second and final goal of the game. Jamie Fraser started the play behind the Sound Tigers' net and fed a pass to Marcinko at the near boards. Marcinko chipped the puck out of the zone where Bentivoglio picked it up and skated in on Greiss. Bentivoglio was able to out-wait the goaltender, cutting across the crease and slide the puck past Greiss' out-stretched right pad to close out the scoring.
The Sound Tigers went 0-for-8 on the power-play and a perfect 5-for-5 on the penalty-kill. The victory improves the Sound Tigers' record to 5-2-0-1 and gives them 11 points on the season and sole possession of second place in the East Division.
The Sound Tigers will return home tonight and prepare for their two games against the Binghamton Senators next weekend starting on Friday at 7 p.m. and then once again Saturday at 7 p.m. On Sunday, the team will return home to take on the Albany River Rats at 4 p.m. Tickets are still available by calling the Sound Tigers' front office at (203) 334-GOAL or by e-mailing info@soundtigers.com.
