QUACK TRACKS

W

The Mallards ended a team record-setting six-game regulation losing streak by defeating Fort Wayne 4-3 Saturday night. That victory was the Mallards' first since they edged Missouri 3-2 on December 30.

Happy New Year

The Mallards Saturday night secured their first victory of 2017 after dropping their first five games of the calendar year.

Streak

The Mallards suffered their club record-setting sixth straight regulation defeat Friday night against Indy. The Mallards have endured five-game regulation losing streaks three times in team history- most recently when they fell in five consecutive International Hockey League games between January 16 and January 24, 2010.

Injury Bug

Due to injuries, the Mallards have dressed just 17 players- instead of the standard 18- for their last four games. The Mallards' leaders or co-leaders in goals (Michael Parks- three games), assists (Nolan LaPorte- two games), points (Sam Warning- two games) and plus/minus rating (Kevin Gibson- one game) and the team's captain (Chris Francis- three games) have all missed time due to injury in the last week and a half.

D

After defensemen Donnie Harris (Wednesday at Cincinnati) and Gibson (Friday against Indy) were injured in successive games last week, the Mallards, who have also been without injured blue liner Mike Wilson for over a month, were left with just four defensemen- Guillaume Gelinas, Alex Gudbranson, Mike Monfredo and Andrew Panzarella. Forward Grant Arnold filled in on defense in Friday's game after Gibson was sidelined and again throughout Saturday's game against Fort Wayne.

Rally

The Mallards Saturday night overcame a 2-0 deficit en route to their tenth come-from-behind win of the season.

Third

The Mallards outscored Fort Wayne 2-1 in the third period Saturday after being outscored 12-1 in the third over their prior five games.

First

The Mallards have given up the first goal in 13 of their last 16 games.

Home Sweet Home

The Mallards halted a three-game home losing streak- their longest such skid this season- with Saturday's win at the iWireless Center. The Mallards over the weekend split the first two games of a four-game homestand that continues today against Tulsa and concludes Friday against Missouri.

On the Road

The Mallards Mallards have lost three straight away games but still boast a better record on the road (11-8-0) than at home (8-7-2).

Four

The Mallards scored four times Saturday against Fort Wayne after scoring three goals or fewer in each of their prior eight games.

Six

The Mallards Friday against Indy allowed a season-high six goals for the third time. The Fuel Friday became the first club other than the Komets to score six against the Mallards this season. Fort Wayne defeated the Mallards 6-2 January 4 after opening the season by vanquishing the Mallards by the same score on October 14.

In the Red

The Mallards- who were outscored 27-10 during their six-game losing streak- are four games over .500 despite having been outscored 108-104 on the season.

Red Light District

Mallards are tied for ninth in the ECHL in goals against per game (3.0). They rank twenty-first in the ECHL in goal scoring (2.9 per game).

Impact Players

Parks and LaPorte returned from injury to play key roles in the Mallards' streak-snapping victory Saturday. Parks scored the game winning goal after missing the prior three games. LaPorte assisted on each of the Mallards' two third period goals- including the Parks winner- after missing two games.

Rapid-Fire

By scoring 22 seconds apart in the second period Friday against Indy, Panzarella- who buried the puck at 6:24- and Pavel Jenys- who cut the Mallards' deficit to 4-3 at 6:46- matched the team season best for fastest two goals first set by Dylan Labbe (2:15 of the third period) and Parks (2:37) on December 10 in a 4-3 Mallard overtime win in Cincinnati.

Deuce

Jack Nevins in Wednesday night's loss at Cincinnati scored two goals in one game for the first time in his career.

On the Plus Side

Gibson is tied for sixth in the ECHL in plus/minus rating (+18).

Hello...Goodbye

Forwards John Siemer and Sebastian Geoffrion both signed with the Mallards last week, played two games and were released. Siemer joined the club Wednesday, played Wednesday and Friday and departed Saturday. Geoffrion arrived Friday, played Friday and Saturday and exited yesterday.

First

Geoffrion recorded his first Mallard point by picking up an assist Saturday against Fort Wayne.

All-Star

Goaltender C.J. Motte will represent the Mallards at this Wednesday's ECHL All-Star Game in Glens Falls, New York. Motte rejoined the Mallards from the American Hockey League's Charlotte Checkers just in time for the midseason classic. Motte returned to ECHL action Wednesday in relief of Adam Vay one night after making 30 saves to backstop the Checkers to a 5-1 win over the Milwaukee Admirals. In total, Motte went 1-0-0 and posted a 0.75 goals against average and .976 save percentage by stopping 41 of the 42 shots he faced over 80 minutes in two games after signing a professional tryout agreement with Charlotte January 3. Motte, who gave up a season high five goals Friday against Fort Wayne, ranks second in the ECHL save percentage (.927), ranks fifth in goals against average (2.39) and is tied for ninth in wins (11).

Pugilistic Puck Stopper

Vay and Cincinnati netminder Michael Houser fought in the third period Wednesday night. Both were assessed game misconducts (for engaging in a secondary altercation) in addition to major penalties for fighting. Vay returned to the Mallard crease Saturday and stopped 32 Fort Wayne shots to backstop the Mallards to victory.

Milestones

Mike Wilson has 198 career regular season assists...Sam Warning has played 99 career games.

Special Teams

By scoring a second period power play goal Saturday, Francis halted the Mallards' streak of 21 straight unsuccessful man advantages. Francis' goal was the Mallards' first on the power play since Alex Petan scored on the advantage on December 30 against Missouri. The Mallards are tied for twentieth in the ECHL on the power play (13.5 percent) and rank eleventh on the penalty kill (84.0 percent).

Head-to-Head

The Mallards have gone 2-0-0 against Tulsa heading into today's season series finale. The Mallards defeated the Oilers 3-2 on October 29 and 4-3 on December 23. The Mallards have not visited Tulsa this season. All-time, the Mallards have gone 17-13-0 against the Oilers overall and 12-6-0 at home....The Mallards and Mavericks meet three times in 48 hours this weekend. The Mallards have won two of their first three clashes with the Mavs this season. The home team has won each of those three games. A 3-2 New Year's Eve defeat in Missouri started the Mallards' six-game losing streak. It was against the Mavericks one night earlier on home ice that the Mallards had last won before securing Saturday's slump-ender against Fort Wayne. The Mallards and Mavs will meet a total of ten times. All-time, the Mallards have gone 25-29-7 against the Mavericks: 11-11-5 at home and 14-18-2 on the road.
