MALLARDS NOTES

Last Night

Carter Verhaege- who finished the evening with two goals and one assist- and Dane Fox- who provided the game winner and an assist- scored vital third period go-ahead goals before the host Mavericks added two late empty netters to defeat the Mallards 5-2.

Splitsville

The Mallards and Mavericks enter today's rubber match of their three-game weekend series with one win apiece. The Mallards defeated the Mavs 5-4 in a shootout Friday night in Moline before falling last night. The Mavericks did earn one point for that shootout setback and thus enter today's tilt having earned three points over the last two evenings compared to the Mallards' two.

First Loss

Phil Axtell last night suffered his first loss in his second game as Mallards interim head coach after replacing Terry Ruskowski, who was relieved of his duties as head coach and general manager Friday.

Full Deck

With forward Sam Warning's return last night from a four-game injury absence (upper body), the Mallards were finally able to dress a full lineup of 18 players after suiting up fewer than that in each of their prior six games due to injuries and call-ups. Before last night, the Mallards last iced a full set of players when they hosted Cincinnati on January 6.

Shooting Gallery

The Mallards took a season-low 15 shots on goal last night. The Mallards established their previous season low when they took 20 shots December 3 in a 3-0 loss at Toledo. The Mallards were out-shot by the Mavericks (28 shots) last night after out-shooting Missouri 36-31 Friday evening.

Empty Net

After Verhaege (at 18:45) and Radoslav Illo (at 19:50) added the empty net clinchers one minute and five seconds apart late in the third last night, a game that had seen neither team lead by more than one goal over the first 58 minutes and 44 seconds went into the books as a three-goal Maverick victory.

Third

The Mavericks outscored the Mallards 4-1 in the third period last night after the Mallards had outscored the Mavericks 3-1 in the third Friday evening. The Mallards have been outscored 20-7 in third period over their last nine games.

Early

The Mallards have scored the first goal early on each of the last two nights only for the Mavericks to rebound to tie the game later in first period on both occasions. Last night Pavel Jenys gave the Mallards a 1-0 lead at 4:21 of the first and Darren Nowick evened the score for Missouri at 9:52 after Michaels Parks scored for the Mallards just 35 seconds into Friday evening's game and the Mavs' Kevin Tansey equalized at 10:43 of the first.

On the Road

Tonight's game is the second of six straight on the road for the Mallards. While the Mallards have lost their last four away games- their longest such skid of the season- they do still boast a better record in road action (11-9-0) than at home (9-8-2). The Mallards last won away on December 18 when the defeated the Wings in Kalamazoo 5-4 in a shootout.

Home Sweet Home

The Mallards Friday night completed a four-game homestand with a record of 2-2-0.

In the Red

The Mallards are three games over .500 despite having been outscored 122-114 on the season.

Red Light District

The Mallards are tied for eleventh in the ECHL in goals against per game (3.1). They are tied for twentieth in the ECHL in goal scoring (3.0 per game).

Parks and Wreck

Parks had a goal and an assist in each of the first two games of the weekend. Last night he briefly tied the score at two in the third period with his team-leading sixteenth goal of the season. Parks has recorded six points (three goals and three assists) in four games since returning from a three-game injury absence (upper body) and has piled up 18 points (ten goals and eight assists) in his last 14 games along with 24 points (14 goals and ten assists) in his last 21 contests. He is also tied for third among ECHL rookies in goals.

Double Down

Jenys' goal last night was his second in as many evenings.

Streak

By assisting on Jenys' goal last night, Chris Francis extended his point-scoring streak to five games (1-4-5).

Warning last night returned to play his one hundredth career game and picked up an assist to mark the occasion. Even in the wake of his recent absence from the lineup, he is second on the team in points (28).

Top Dog

Justin Kovacs remains the Mallards' leader in points (29) and assists (20) despite seeing his four-game point-scoring streak (1-3-4) end last night.

Between the Pipes

C.J. Motte made 23 saves and allowed three goals while suffering the loss last night. Motte ranks fourth in the ECHL save percentage (.923) and fifth in goals against average (2.50). Adam Vay Friday night stopped 27 Missouri shots over 65 minutes along with two more in the shootout on the way to his second straight win.

Milestones

Mike Wilson has 198 career regular season assists.

Power Play

The Mallards went 0-for-2 on the power play last night, have gone 0-for-7 against Missouri over the last two nights, have failed to score on their last 12 advantages overall and have converted just one of their last 34. The Mallards have dropped to twenty-fifth in the ECHL on the power play (12.5 percent).

Penalty Kill

The Mavericks scored on their lone power play last night and have gone 2-for-4 over the last two evenings against the Mallards, who have also been scored upon three times in their foes' last six power plays. The Mallards are now tied for sixteenth in the league in penalty killing (83.2 percent).

Head-to-Head

The Mallards head into today's third meeting in 48 hours with the Mavericks having gone 3-2-0 against Missouri this season. The home team has won each of those five games. The Mallards have lost six straight regular season games at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena since last defeating the Mavs on the road when they claimed a 4-3 shootout victory in Independence on March 29, 2015. Regular season and postseason combined, the Mallards- who were swept in four games by Missouri in the opening round of last spring's playoffs- have dropped their last eight away games against the Mavericks. The Mallards and Mavericks will meet a total of ten times this year. All-time, the Mallards have gone 26-30-7 against Missouri: 12-11-5 at home and 14-19-2 on the road.
