Madison Mallards News Release

Madison, WI - The Lakeshore Chinooks (16-8) held a slim lead for most of Friday night's game at the 'Duck Pond' against the Madison Mallards (13-9) but exploded for seven runs in the top of the eighth to ultimately come out on top 11-3 in another rain-shortened game.

The umpires called the game heading into the top of the ninth after rain hit the 'Duck Pond' yet again.

Danny Sullivan (Davenport) relieved Mallards starter Jamie Nunn in the fifth inning and faced the minimum in his first three innings of work. He then allowed four straight hits to start the top of the eighth and was replaced by Nick Smith (Western Illinois). The Chinooks sent 11 to the plate in the frame and the inning was highlighted by right fielder John Norwood's (Vanderbilt) grand slam to left field. The Chinooks ended up scoring seven in the inning.

The Chinooks also scored four in the second off of Nunn. Nunn pitched a 1-2-3 inning in his other three innings on the mound. He allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits and walked one. He struck out three Chinooks batters.

The Mallards got on the board in the bottom of the second thanks to a Tate Matheny (Missouri State) RBI single that scored catcher Jason Goldstein (Illinois). Their other two runs came in the fifth off of a Drew Weeks (North Florida) home run and a John LaPrise (Virginia) run that came off of a Chinooks error.

Tim Faix (Kent State) relieved Chinooks starter David Lucroy (East Carolina) in the fifth and recorded the win. He improves to 1-0 on the season.

Shawn Hunter (Oklahoma State) also saw action on the mound for the Mallards. He relieved Smith in the seven-run eighth and struck out Cody Bobbit (Wichita State) to get out of the inning.

The Mallards recorded five hits on the night and were led by left fielder Joe McCarthy's (Virginia) two singles. Bre'shon Kimbell (Louisiana Tech) recorded the other Mallards hit and finished 1-for-3.

The Chinooks were led by Norwood's four RBIs and catcher Mike Hollenbeck's (Illinois State) perfect 4-for-4 day at the plate with two runs scored and two RBIs.

With the loss, the Mallards fall to two games behind the Chinooks for the Northwoods League South Division lead. They are also one game behind the La Crosse Loggers (15-9).

The Mallards continue their three-game series with the Chinooks tomorrow at 6:35 pm in Mequon, Wisconsin. The two teams then return to Madison Sunday for the series finale. First pitch is set for 3:05 pm.

Sunday's game is Charter Communications Police Appreciation Night with an Officer Maynard Bobblehead giveaway. The IBEW Night in the Great Dane Duck Blind will also take place.

The 2013 season is upon us! Single-game tickets are on-sale now!
