Malec Transferred To Trenton

(Trenton, NJ)- The Trenton Thunder, Double-A Affiliate of the New York Yankees, have announced that INF Chris Malec has been transferred to Trenton from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. INF Carlos Mendoza has been placed on the Disabled List.
Malec was promoted to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on April 25 and appeared in 19 games for the Yankees. He batted .226 with one home run and 13 RBI. Prior to his promotion, Malec batted a .375 BA for the Thunder in 13 games with six RBI. He was third in the Eastern League in Batting Average, and second in On-Base Percentage (.479) at the time of his promotion. During 2008, he hit .291 with five home runs and 52 RBI (career-high) in 119 games (career-high) with Trenton. He also set career highs in hits (118), runs (65), doubles (28), triples (3), and walks (57). He was selected to the 2008 Eastern League All-Star Game. Malec finished third in the Eastern League in OBP (.407). Malec was selected by the Yankees in the 16th round of the 2005 draft. He graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a degree in Law & Society prior to joining the Yankees in 2005.
Mendoza was hitting .300 with the Thunder in six games since returning from Scranton/Wilkes-Barre May 4th. He started the season on the Thunder Disabled List and was promoted to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on April 16th. In three games with the Yankees, he was 2 x 9 with a run and an RBI. In 2008, he had a .280 BA with 13 RBI in 30 games. He hit .210 with 13 doubles and 17 RBI in 84 games with Trenton in 2007. He had his contract purchased by the Yankees 8/12/06, and played 31 G that season for Tampa. He was re-signed by the Yankees as a free agent on 11/2/06. He has previous Eastern League experience with Norwich in 2003. He made his professional debut in the Giants' Organization in 1997.
